That makes no sense for Dadonov why Ottawa? they aren't competitive not even close.

That's more confusing than Hall to Buffalo because at least Hall gets to play with Eichel for a year and then cash in.

Sens have one of the best prospect pools; the near future is very bright in ottawa. Maybe he likes the idea of having gritty teammates that can insulate him, unlike the leafs who are soft as baby ****

Why would he choose to go there?

Good signing. RW was an area of need for them. Dad, Brown, Batherson, Watson (+ White) now makes it a deep position for them.

Ottawa are sticking to the plan nicely. 80-85 point season (pace) and finishing 20th-25th for the upcoming year would be a nice result for them.

Along with Sens having a strong pool, they have a ton of cap space. If they would keep spending this year, get a few more UFAs ...it will help their rebuild way better than trying to rely on top picks for years. They need players like Dadanov to help the young players get better.

And Murray will surprise a lot of people. I can see him getting back to where he was when with Pitt. Maybe not right away but he will continue to get there as he settles in. With Chabot on D, and drafting Stutzle...the Sens are better off speeding up their rebuild imo.

Especially with this flat cap. Allowing them to be able to get the UFAs they normally wouldnt have. They do still have Connor Brown and Tierney to sign(with their age Id give them longer term and less money since Sens need to sign Tkachuk and others next year). Those 2 players are good enough where they could always trade them away anyway if they need to a few years from now. Especially if on good deals.

Now that UFAs saw Dadanov sign, they should be able to get some others. Maybe a Kahun for 1 or 2 years...he may come down on his price. He left Buffalo because he wanted to get paid. Talent like that on a 1 or 2 year deal to help the young guys develop.

Colin White will have Dadanov and Tkachuk now. Thats a good addition for them both. But mainly to get White to develop like they thought he would. We havent seen that yet.

They should also surround Stutzle with talent right away.

I like what the Sens are doing. And it started with trading for Murray. Every other fan base thought Murray would be a waste of a pickup but theyll wish their team traded for him.

If handled right, the Sens should be getting much better each season. More now than they would have if just kept finishing top 5 imo. Sens already have enough prospects. And while they didnt get Lafrienere, being able to still land someone like Stutzle at 3 takes away the sting.

Sanderson on D to go with Chabot, Brannstrom, etc. Murray in net whos only 26 and now past his growing pains, after starting his career off great(with a great pedigree even before those cups...he broke records in AHL with his play, so its not like he came out of nowhere).

While they may not get another top pick because of these additions(Murray and Dadanov) it will help guys like Colin White and others develop more than they would have with less talent around them. So that makes up for it anyway.

Look at the Wings for example. Had Larkin, Bertuzzi, and Mantha who are all good young talent. But since thats all they had...its stalled their development. And theyve done bad in the drafts before Yzerman, with Zadina/Rasmussen/etc. So they have been stuck. That team should have completed their rebuild by now or close to it. But they are years away. Seider and Lucas Raymond should both be good picks but now the 3 I mentioned are getting older. They are gonna need Yzerman to work some miracles. They also dont have a goalie. Its not easy finding a franchise one that is good enough to win it all. Murray has already proven he can do that. Sens wont have to worry about finding that. Most expect the same Murray that was in Pitt the last few years but imo it will be closer to what he was the first few years.

He spent 25 on Murray, and 64 on Chabot.

We hate Melnyk in Ottawa but he did say he was going to start to spend in 2021, a few years ago. He might actually be staying true to his word on that? We'll see...

Just out of curiosity; did he provide a reason why starting to spend in 2021 and not before?

As much im happy for Ottawa fans to have signed a good ufa under Melnyk....

Ottawa having a chance in just a canadian division is simply funny. They will be farmed unless they make more move which they easily can if Melnyk can stop acting like a broke ass man

Amusing thing is that other than these 2 past purge/rebuild years, Ottawa has been a playoff team more often than not and gone pretty deep as well. All this to say that we are pretty decent at building competitive teams, thanks to our scouting/drafting and player development. Those were never weaknesses and I think consensus right now is that we are at or near top in terms of prospect depth and quality.

Thats a fantastic deal.

Could Florida really not beat that?
They might not have wanted to. Dadonov is a solid scoring winger: good wheels, doesn't pass on too many shots, and tends to pinch early in transition (not quite a cherry picker). For whatever reason, during his tenure, he's been in the dog house of every coach we've had in Florida--regularly demoted to the third line. Whether it's a good call with the Panthers' scoring issues, new management might have just asked Q whether he was worth signing.

it's actually a good philosophy.

Don't spend money to try to stop the bleeding of a declining team. Slash even more, build draft picks, and spend when you are on the way up.
The issue is when you're still at the "up" and you slash everything down again.
