I'll be honest...I'm kinda shocked that we managed to move Stepan without giving up anything else, let alone getting a desperately-needed draft pick out of it. For a GM as normally-excellent as Dorion, this feels kinda out of place to get a declining Stepan and nothing extra for a second-round pick.

Stepan is a great value at the $2m in salary he has remaining this season. Arizona already paid his $3m signing bonus.

This makes sense for both teams.

Ottawa isn’t trying to win the cup, but they do want to start being competitive. Stepan is a good guy to have in a room of young players (many of whom are Americans) and can eat some minutes in any situation.

And with the amount of draft picks we had this year + three 2nds next year, giving up one of them doesn’t hurt.

On cue thought, this board will overreact over a 2nd round pick!

Not really a bad deal for Ottawa, at worst they probably can recoup the pick at the trade deadline if they eat half of his salary(which will not be much given he only gets paid 2M for the actual season)
