On the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Wayne wore 19 for a while and then 14. (He wanted to wear 9 like his idol, Mr. Hockey, but Brian Gualazzi was already wearing it).
That same year Espo and Hodge got traded from Boston to NY, where Rod Gilbert already had 7, so Espo took 77, (and Hodge took 88). Wayne said, "It was the first time anybody could remember anyone wearing anything past 31. So Muzz (Muzz MacPherson, the coach of the Greyhounds) said to me one day, why don't you try 99."
As the story goes, he tried it out, got a hat trick that night, and never looked back.

Maybe in some press photos (you can see him in a number 20 Indianapolis jersey too) but if I'm not mistaken he wore 99 in all 8 games for the Racers, here is his first professional goal (as a Racer obviously) and he has 99 on.

Long dead thread but he clearly was wearing number 99 for his first two pro goals which came against Edmonton.
