probably not what you expected with the title and all.....

i was on the NYR boards, reading a thread that was talking about Zach Parise. in that thread, and others, i keep seeing a few phrases pop up. "class act", "elite", things like that.

nothing bad about Parise. i believe he's in those categories. i was just wondering what other phrases, if any, do you guys see in your frequented threads? maybe we could end up making a poll later.... just something for fun.

I think "chirp" is a great one - seems so "hockey-like" to me. Can't imagine using that term in any other sport and not getting funny looks.

One I like is mucker & grinder. It's the guy who lives in the trenches and works his butt off, but doesn't always get the glory. Here are some more hockey slang words.

How a real jack-hole is admirably called a "pest" (that's you Avery).
And a dirty spearing, slash-to-the-face, wouldn't spit on the guy if he was on fire Perry/Ott is called "Gritty".

In what world are Perry and Ott not called pests? You'd have to have your Ducks/Stars goggles on pretty tight to not admit they're also pests. Is there a certain amount of grit that comes with being a pest? Absolutely, you will eventually take your shots back as one. But in hockey parlance "pest" is not some genteel friendly term for wacky hijinks. It's all but synonymous with someone you'd like to see get decapitated by the zamboni.
