OT: Question about the Refs

Was talking hockey with a buddy yesterday and he brought up a question that I had no answer for(shocking I know). He was saying that we all know there will be players who`ll need to shake some game rust off but what about the refs??? How did, or how do the refs stay "sharp" during a situation such as this??

I have never been a ref but I assume that their preparation for games, although different, has to be part of their day to day process? Anyone know if NHL refs were working say AHL games or alike??

I think there's a bigger question. Let's assume the refs aren't "sharp" to begin the season...will anyone notice the difference?

I could be mistaken (it happens a lot) but I think I'd read that the ref signed some agreement to not take other (reffing) jobs during the lockout.
