Well...physicality of hockey VS basketball gives someone a pretty apparent edge, I dont think anyone can argue that.

Doesn't matter how athletic Howard is, if you can't take a punch you can't take a punch. I don't know if Howard has ever gotten into an actual fight like Chara has, so I can't say for a fact Chara would win, but I doubt Howard knows how to fight as well as Chara, and his athleticism won't make up any of the difference.

It's a pretty easy question unless Howard has done some unknown training. A guy with a wrestling pedigree (on top of knowing how to throw a punch) will bring a fight to the ground and finish quickly. Big & athletic does not mean good in a fight or can take a punch. Sure Howard would have some dangerous haymakers but I don't think Chara would have a problem dodging a couple of those and taking down an offbalance Howard. And once someone with no experience hits their back its like a fish out of water for someone who knows the ground game.

A professional athlete being found in or having ties to a local gym isn't exactly out of the ordinary though. Nothing on any formal training on the net, which doesn't mean it hasn't happened, however usually that kind of thing comes out when talking about offseason training regimenes. Especially when the player in question is at or near the top of his sport like Wade.

Has anyone ever even seen the guy throw a punch though?

Orlando Sentinel piece on the Magic using boxing for conditioning and stamina training - it looks like Howard did some, but not currently:

http://articles.orlandosentinel.com..._todd-drespling-boxing-workouts-orlando-magic

"I thought it was kind of weird that they were sending me in here to box at first, but I love it," said Anderson, who has been boxing since he was traded to the Magic in June 2009. "It's just a great workout, and I see now why we keep coming back here and bringing guys here."

The goal of these sessions isn't to become better fighters: No one is punching the Magic players, and they're not punching anyone unless they're aiming jabs, hooks and uppercuts into the pads Drespling often wears on his hands or over his ribs and stomach.

Magic strength and conditioning coach Joe Rogowski endorses the boxing workouts because they improve the players' stamina, balance and mental toughness. The boxing also breaks up the monotony of players' usual training routines of shooting baskets and weightlifting at Amway Center and running on the Jones High School track.

...

Former Magic players Marcin Gortat, Tony Battie and Courtney Lee occasionally return to the gym, too. Dwight Howard did some boxing workouts there several years ago.

So, it doesn't look like he has any serious training and boxing experience.

My post is from people saying basketball players are better fighters then NHL players.. Wanted to see views from other people...

Basketball players can't fight for ****. Have you ever watched an NBA fight? Rarely a punch get's landed. Same thing in the MLB. Except in the MLB, it looks like they are about to get in a fight, then they just grapple each other.

Ignorant hockey fan much? Some know how to fight, some don't. It doesn't appear Howard has any fighting background so until proven otherwise, Chara would win.

The way hockey is played wouldn't give you the egde in a fight. Most hockey players have a pretty average body and don't seem to be particularly strong.

I'd actually say just the opposite, having played them both. Being able to post up and block out effectively in basketball translates better to fighting than anything you can do on skates. Not that either sport would really help you fight.

In all seriousness, Chara would win handily. There is very little size difference (2 inches/10 pounds) as previously mentioned, and even that difference is probably eliminated because I'm sure Chara has much lower body fat.

The big difference is toughness and fighting experience. Chara is just hard as nails, and if the fight went to the ground, he would have a huge advantage because of his wrestling experience.

I've never seen a basketball player throw a decent punch btw.

I would say chara on the basis that he's actually taken blows to the face.

NBA players don't have real fistfights because if they did there would be deaths from it. And I doubt Howard is taking bare knuckle punches to the head on his free time for fun.

Even if Howard had used boxing as a training method, that doesn't mean he knows how to utilize that training in an actual fight.

I'd bet on Chara based on his wrestling background. Oh, and the fact he plays hockey. :sarcasm:

(In regard to the statement that Chara must have lower body fat)

Chara can do something like 36 consecutive pullups, which for a 260lb man is almost unheard of. Not only is he a freak about working out, he is apparently meticulous about his diet, and almost never drinks alcohol.
