What is going on in Liverpool?

Their top players had all played over 100 games over the previous two seasons and had won all of the major trophies, so they needed to strengthen last summer for when key injuries inevitably hit and players lost motivation.

They didn’t.

Van Dijk went down (as did Gomez), and they didn’t have any quality CBs to replace them (they let Lovren go), so:
- their attacking FBs had to play further back, hurting the attack, and
- they played their midfielders at the back, which made their midfielder weaker.

... and I’m loving it.

I don't read the game news but it could be they need a retooling like City's done. Klopp's future with the team is still safe and only if he moved on would Liverpool have some major rebuilding.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Klopp walked away after the season. He seems a bit like Guardiola in that respect.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool brought in Gerrard to replace him.

- their attacking FBs had to play further back, hurting the attack, and

Basically covers it all ya :(. When will it stop?
And not just VVD and Gomez lost on defense. Matip is also gone for season. So that's all their real CBs. The 2 midfielders you mentioned that are taking their places, both have had significant injuries, and one of them (who's also the leader of the team) is still gone. So basically they've consistently had to use their 6-8th choices back there...
Even the 2 CB's they bought in January to fill in are injured.

Also don't forget the front 3 (albeit affected by all you said) have been relatively crap since ~Christmas. Only Salah seems to be performing at all. Still leading the league in goals I think, but not even close to his top. Firmino and surprisingly Mané have been pretty horrible.

... and I’m loving it.

Evil!
But don't worry, don't need top 4. We'll still make Champions League next year by winning Champions League this year :):(:(.
