Absolutely heartbreaking news. Heartbreaking.

I coached an outstanding young baseball player for multiple years — terrific young man from a great family — who got diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in his early 20s. Unfortunately he didn’t make it. It’s a terrible disease.

Prayers for Oskar & his family in this horribly difficult time. He’s got a tough road ahead. Thankfully he’ll have access to the best care & doctors.

Pens fan coming in peace. Ewing's Sarcoma just took the life of a very good friend of mine a few weeks ago. He was 31 years old and passed away 9 months after Diagnosis. Heartbreaking and terrifying stuff. I am very hopeful Lindblom can overcome this. Godspeed, Oskar.
I am very sorry for your loss. Cancer took my father at 40 and that's too young. Young people, especially little children, having to face cancer is a dagger in my heart.

Talking with my friend, oncology specialist.

3-6 months of cycled IV chemo. No oral regimens.

National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends Vincristine, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, +/- ifosfamide +/- etoposide. The 5 drug regimen offers highest remission rates and 5 year positive outcome rates according to 3 high powered studies I saw when compared to 3 or 4 drug regimens. Real life applications generally follow the guidelines for this disease.

Dox, cyclophos, and vincristine one week, then in 2-3 weeks ifos and etop. This is one cycle. Repeat for 3-6 months.

Overall, very treatable, even with metastases, though obviously the latter offers a poorer prognosis than the former.

Super Mario did it, why can't the Super Swede.

Godspeed

Obviously hockey is the least of his/our worries right now, but out of curiosity, what kind of effect will this have on him physically? Like if the chemo works? Would he be able to play again? Would it take a long time to get back?

This is a reminder of how life is the most precious of resources. It can change quickly. Appreciate what you have and those in it. Hopefully, Oskar can recover first as a person and then enjoy the gift of being a pro athlete.

From Dave Isaac:

Flyers' Oskar Lindblom diagnosed with rare form of bone cancer

It’s always a bit of an eye-raiser when a young player needs a “maintenance day” after a day off.

Turns out it’s not a nagging injury for 23-year-old winger Oskar Lindblom. It’s much worse.

The Flyers announced Friday evening that he has been diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, and is not expected to return to play this season.

“The Flyers will do everything possible to support Oskar and assist him in securing the best care available,” team president and general manager Chuck Fletcher said in a press release. “Out of respect for Oskar and his family, the team will have no further comment at this time and asks that Oskar be afforded a period of privacy so that he may focus his efforts on his treatment and a return to full health.”

Lindblom was diagnosed by what the team says are “leading specialists” at the University of Pennsylvania. He will undergo further testing and evaluation next week and begin treatment as soon as doctors suggest he should.

The Swedish left wing in his third NHL season co-leads the team through 31 games with 11 goals. He did not play in Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche, which was only the second game he’s missed since the start of last season.

According to Penn’s Abramson Cancer Center, Ewing’s sarcoma “is a type of tumor that forms from a neuroendocrine cell in bone or soft tissue. It may be found in the bones of the legs, arms, chest, pelvis, spine, or skull. Ewing tumors often occur in teenagers and young adults, under the age of 25.”

Odds are high the chemo will work. While on chemo he will feel like shit and be susceptible to disease since it'll destroy his white blood cells too. He'll be taking antibiotics just in case for the duration of treatment most likely.

Anything can happen with rehab. Cookie came back, as did Lemieux. Many others as well. Bone cancer to my knowledge doesn't make you any more susceptible to future (far or near) bone problems as far as I know.

I believe after he beats this we'll see him again and I will cry harder than I am right now

He mentioned Lemieux who came back. But he was older at that time & made a decision he was done for good regardless in 1996-1997. But then came back 2000-2001 but it didn’t physically take him that long to come back. That was a personal choice involved in there too.

Different forms of cancer & all that but Phil Kessel, Jason Blake, Brian Boyle, Matt Cooke, etc. are some guys who had cancer while playing.
