Tomasino named to Nashville's RTP playoff roster. It's doubtful that he sees any games, but that'd be awesome for him if he could sneak into one

Update: he's not in the NHL practice group though, he's with the AHL guys in the 2nd practice

City helps Gens with 2021 Memorial Cup bid

Renovations needed to host Memorial Cup

The city will be helping the Oshawa Generals with the team’s bid to host the 2021 Memorial Cup.
City council has lent unanimous support behind the decision to help Oshawa’s OHL team in its bid to host the tournament. Previously, the city’s finance committee had referred the item back to staff, but it was brought forward again at a recent special council meeting.
Council approved $200,000 of in-kind services, and $50,000 to be added to the 2021 budget to aid in the Gens’ bid, while $110,000 will go to needed renovations at the Tribute Communities Centre.
These renovations include additional space in the press box and video replay room, which Mayor Dan Carter notes is so small, it is difficult to fit himself and Gens General Manager Roger Hunt at the same time.
Initially the Gens asked for $350,000 from the city in in-kind funds, but further correspondence saw that change to $250,000 from the city, and another $250,000 from the region.
One concern expressed by councillors at the finance committee meeting when the request was referred back to staff was the economic impact.
According to the report from staff, the estimated economic impact for the last Memorial Cup, held in 2019 in Halifax, NS, was $15 million.
The most recent tournament hosted in Ontario was in Windsor, which saw an estimated economic impact of $10- to $17 million.
However, the report does note the impact may not be as high for the next Memorial Cup due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But, due to the impact of the pandemic, Hunt tells council there is “no better time” to host an event like the Memorial Cup, as the city is recovering.
Several councillors expressed their approval at the idea of hosting the cup, with Ward 3 City Councillor Bradley Marks calling the idea “quite exciting,” and Ward 2 City Councillor Jane Hurst calling the idea “awesome.”
“I probably wouldn’t see my husband for a week,” quips Hurst.
However, both councillors still had their concerns.
One request from the team is the installation of metal detectors, and Marks asked Hunt if this was due to a requirement from the CHL, or if this was a request from the team.
Hunt says Oshawa is an area where weapons are trafficked, and the goal is to make the Tribute Communities Centre as “family friendly” as possible.
“[Shootings] unfortunately do happen,” he says.
Marks believes the installation of metal detectors will ultimately give residents peace of mind as they attend Gens games, concerts, and other events.
The other team currently bidding to host the Memorial Cup tournament is the Soo Greyhounds, and Hurst was curious what their facility looks like compared to Oshawa’s.
Hunt explains both stadiums are comparable, with the Greyhounds home ice being a few years younger.
“It’s similar to the Tribute Communities Centre in that you can see the ice from everywhere,” he says.
Ultimately, council voted to help the Gens with no resistance.

Hunt saying "Oshawa is an area where weapons are trafficked and we need to make it family friendly" might be the weirdest justification for something he's trying to get done I've ever heard lol. Am I missing something? Looking at the numbers of homicides per 100,000 people for 2006-2016, Oshawa is among the lowest of anyone. Wtf is Hunt talking about? I get trying to justify the thing you're trying to get done, but why would you ever act like your city is a war zone where people are bringing guns to an OHL game, which definitely is not happening. I don't get it.

OHL cities:
Oshawa: 0.77
Guelph: 0.79
Kingston: 0.80
Barrie: 0.93
Niagara: 0.94
Kitchener: 1.03
Windsor: 1.03
Sudbury: 1.15
Peterborough: 1.15
Toronto: 1.54
Thunder Bay: 4.04

Peterborough homicide rate remains below national average

Nashville used both camps together for a full scrimmage today and Tomasino wasn't a part of it. When talking to one of the Nashville beat writers he said that since Trenin is back, Phil is likely off the roster so he can't go on the ice with them. So he's working with the skill coaches after practices but he never actually went on the ice with the group.

Don't see how a guy would make the team next season full time if he can't even get into 1 scrimmage or practice in July. Don't see how he's not back with the Gens next year unless Nashville trades away like 3/4 forwards in the off season and doesn't get any new ones

Pieces falling into place for Gens. City has ponied up $ support. Gens now going thru process of obtaining regional $ support. Don't know about bid timelines, which have obviously been extended (to unknown date???). Suspect they are waiting for the two cities to get their respective ducks aligned.

I may have missed it but has there been an update on the Memorial Cup bidding process/time lines?

Last I talked to Rocco (about a week ago) the OHL hadn't set a date for when the bids were going to be done yet. They gave both teams the option of doing a virtual bid but both teams opted to wait and do an in-person one instead

It's not going to have or require metal detectors, that's for sure.

Was able to watch David Mudrak for the first time live today in the Slovakia vs Czech Republic U20 game and I thought he looked good. He was very aggressive physically and jumped up in the play confidently several times with easy. The foot speed is there. Can see what people meant about his shot. A couple times on the PP he let an absolute bomb go from the point, but didn't seem too worried about whether people were between him and the net or not lol

They play again Sunday at 11am and then Monday at 11am. All against CZE and there's a stream for all 3 games

17 forwards named to Nashville’s playoff roster but not Tomasino. He wasn’t going to play a playoff game anyways but the fact that he’s not even on the roster really bodes well for him being back with the Gens next year (if there’s a season)

All players points accumulated in this round count as playoff points for official stats. Technically it is the "play in" round but for all intents and purposes it is elimination hockey and therefore playoff hockey.

Thank you lol. When the numbers go under "playoff stats", I don't see how you'd call it anything else

Boston could lose all games and they are still in the “playoffs”

It’s round robin hockey for them to ensure they aren’t rusty. They have no threat of elimination

If Studnicka scores today, he'd have 1 career NHL playoff goal in the official stats. Don't see how you could argue its not a playoff game when it goes under the official stats as a playoff game. Under your logic if he never played another game after today he'd finish with 1 playoff goal in 0 playoff games

It’s not a playoff game. Its not called a playoff game. It’s a round robin game in the middle of a pandemic. The stats are going to be jumbled all into postseason stats for the simplicity of record keeping. But if you think the Bruins are approaching it as a true playoff game then
They even said weeks ago they will be managing the playing time of players and care 0% about what seed they finish with.

Man he’s looking good. I hope so badly for him that he gets to play in the ohl. It won’t be next year but that year after there will be spots and maybe he’ll be ready

Brock Otten did his preview for Nashville's OHL prospects today and had this to say about Tomasino next season: "Next year, I would expect Tomasino to be back in the OHL and not in the NHL. I think another year in Oshawa (on a great team) would be great for him. Help him cut down on some offensive zone turnovers. Help him continue to get stronger. Help him continue to round out his game. If he's in the OHL, he's probably a top candidate for the scoring title and the Red Tilson."
