I wonder if it would be worthwhile to try to acquire Gabe Vilardi from Kingston. Since he got ruled out from the WJ's that likely means he won't be back in the OHL before the trade deadline, so you could use that against Kingston and offer them far less than Vilardi normally would get back for them. Riddle the deal with conditionals based on games played and performance. If he stays out with the injury, you're not hurt because its all conditionals, so basically you just stood pat at the deadline. If he comes back and is healthy the rest of the year, you just got potentially the best player in the league for much cheaper than the best players in the league usually cost

I wouldn’t touch him either. Back issues over two years are a red flag.

That's why you riddle it with conditionals based on games played and performance. You get the chance he is healthy, which means he'd be a top 3 player in the whole league, and you have very little risk for if he isn't healthy

Well for all the "he is fragile stuff" have to remember he was a phenomenal player last year for Kingston. The right mix of conditionals would be a very smart move for any team.

Why not make a deal for Vilardi?

Last year the Petes dealt The Petes dealt the rights to overage Finnish forward Jonne Tammela to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in exchange for a conditional 15th round 2018 draft pick. If Tammela had met some conditions......played games with SSM or scored a certain # of points with SSM, the 15th round pick would have become a more significant pick(s). Tammela never played for SSM so they only had to give up their 15th round pick.

That's just smart managing IMO.......pretty small risk for a shot at an impact player.

Exactly. 22 goals and 58 points in 32 games in the regular season and then 11 goals and 22 points in 16 playoff games

Not the time to be wasting assets on a maybe. Gens are a couple moves away from winning the East. You dont waste it on Villardi.

I think the Gens are more likely to stand pat (or make a few minor moves) and keep assets for next year than they are to go all-in this year. This move kind of does both. Saves assets but gives you the chance he's healthy and you hit a home run

Wasn't able to watch tonight but it sounds like all 3 Gens had a good game. Jack scored on the PP too.

If I’m not mistaken, Windsor would get a couple 2ds from Kingston if he plays. So if the conditions are Two 2nds if he makess it through the playoffs, than I’d jump all over that. Maybe One 2nd per playoff round up to 2 2nds max.

TRADE: We'll have to wait for the Christmas freeze to be over but we do have a trade between Niagara and Oshawa.
Looking into it

Those are certainly unexpected trading partners. Sounds like Jack Studnicka to the Dogs.

Hearing We'll see Team Canada FWD Jack Studnicka and Matt Brassard go to the Niagara IceDogs in exchange for Lleyton Moore and Picks.
World Jr freeze is over on January 6th, so will not be complete until then.

Ohl insiders did nail the Cirelli to Erie trade (although he said it was for Lodnia, not McShane)

He’s broken quite a few Niagara trades so clearly he has someone in their organization who tells him things

There is supposed to be a part two of this deal happening at a later date that sees Tomasino go to Oshawa.
Anything can happen between now and then tho so I'm not going to hold my breath.

So we are selling this year which is right move. So next year should be a buy year. Big need for goalie.

Ohl insiders is right more often than people give him credit for, but I wouldn’t act like this is a done deal by any means. We’ll see

Well if ohl insider right and Brassard is traded to Niagara him being an OA we would be at 3 and Ceci still be in the picture. So trading Keyser is not a far fetched as could get a boat load in return. There is a good chance that Studnika & Keyser don't return as Oa's.
Guess we will have to wait till the world juniors is over.

You have to quantify “boatload” with respect to Keyser. Some people have a far differing opinion of what they does actually mean, Looking at the DiPietro deal, many feel they got a rubber dingy in return.

Elite goalies hardly ever get traded. Add in the limits on how far into the future you can trade picks and this trade sets the precedent going forward, there was no prior precedent to follow

Who's the contender out there who is not set in goal? Maybe OS if they decide not to sell? London and the Soo are good in the west. Ott and Nia are good in the east.

Would Keyser be that much of an upgrade over Popovich in Guelph for the Storm to surrender a "boat load" when they need to upgrade in other areas if they decide they are buyers?

Two of the hardest things to get big return for at or near the deadline are goalies and import players.

Of OS is the only trade partner, there'll be no boat load going the other way.
