I don’t have a video readily available of it so I’ll have to describe it.
It’s a common set play off of an offensive zone draw. If the offensive team wins the draw, a forward, usually a winger, will circle up from the hashmarks to the blue line and will often be open with some room for a shot attempt.
The reason it works is the defensemen, who have the responsibility of the wingers, won’t vacate the dangerous ice near their net and follow the winger toward the blueline.
My questions are 1) Does this set play have any particular name and 2) Does anyone know the origins of this play?
