Most obvious 3 stars ever (though I had them in a different order). Benchbrawl's skaters were easily the best in the draft, led by his 1-2 punch at C, but Plante was a big advantage in goal.

fwiw i had plante #1, beliveau #2, and chelios #3. but then i also had IE winning it. it was super close and i took my time deciding but having chelios as that team's 1D was finally what swayed me.

Chelios was a great pick-up for IE. He got him quite late after waiting a long time to pick his D, and the move worked great for him.

Honestly I was really happy with my F group. There were some strong value picks for me up and down those 12. The reality is the draft broke well for my position and the idea I had in mind was mostly realized. Some of team construction is what other people do.

One day I will find a way to win one of these damn things with an elite goalie haha.

Speaking of how the draft unfolded, the second round really put me on my heels...
I was hoping to take Brodeur but @TheDevilMadeMe took him, which I wasn't super surprised by, but it was earlier than last year. Then @ImporterExporter's pick of Clarke really threw me off. I didn't see it coming because he already had Crosby at center. That would've started my team off with a great combo of Ovechkin - Clarke with no Original 6 teams burned.

Wow, the fluctuations for each player are surprisingly wild. Beliveau from 68th to 8th to 50th. Crazy.

Last two years... sometime around Round Six, the bell rings and the first five Leafs go- bang/bang/bang/bang/bang.

In (what I guess we could call) the 12-team era, 10 Leafs are always selected. 10 Habs are always selected. 10 Rangers are always selected.

11 Bs are always selected.

The Leafs pick locations seem to be more consistent than Montreal's (although it's interesting to see how late Apps went in 2018). I suspect this is due to the Leafs not having as many high impact players. Really they have none, not that they aren't important players, but no #1 D, no elite/very good goaltender, Conacher is a 1st liner for sure, but he's probably average for 12 teams.

Detroit and Boston both have more high impact players than Toronto, I'd be interested to see the results for both of those teams if you feel like continuing. (Even Chicago has several players better than the top Leafs).

Ones I feel good about

1) Boston - Esposito really filled a huge hole on my team
2) Rangers - Cook felt like a decent enough pick at the time and remained so
3) Montreal - Getting Robinson that late was a steal

Ones I'm meh on
1) Detroit - Delvecchio was fine but had I been more aggressive I could've taken a star far earlier. Yzerman was on my list for a while before he was taken.

Ones I Screwed Up
1) Chicago - Oof, I knew there was a cliff in Chicago and I managed to tumble straight off of it
2) Toronto - Probably should've taken a Leafs center instead to replace Lindros and give my third line some defensive chops instead of Jackson

You already know I like Bill Cook at 21, even though he's never been selected that high before. I'm not entirely sure about Coulter at 146... but since that was The Champion's Choice, that pretty much puts the quietus to any reservations. Nothing succeeds like success, as Old Man Dumas said...

Coulter got taken 245th in 2018 because the GM could afford to wait.

As you know, in the OPPF it's often more about how the dominoes fall than about the intrinsic value of a player.

For my team, Coulter was an excellent, "Gerard-like" partner for Cleghorn, who had been sitting alone for too long on my 2nd pairing.

Bill Cook: There are a lot of elite RWers available on deep franchises (Richard, Lafleur, Conacher, Makarov, Cook) that makes you hesitate to burn one as early as the 20s. But I still think Cook is a great pick-up, as the Rangers aren't that deep, and Cook brings a rare package.

Maybe it's because I'm adequately familiar with the history here is why people's quotes resonate so clearly with me. Here's a selection:

Sucks to just miss Brodeur, but I'm not getting caught playing the goalie game, even if it means burning an O6 team early...
Chicago selects Glenn Hall, G (Chicago)
At the cost of using up O6 & a pick in the teens, it DOES put the goalie conundrum to bed.

I have a feeling this pick will elicit a **** or 2.

Chelios, Chris, D, Chicago
I think you UNDERcounted the number of ****s.

One pick later, TDMM put on a brave face by saying:
Thank you @ImporterExporter for making this pick easy:

Stan Mikita, C (Chicago)
but later revealed where his heart was when indicating-
...he picked Chelios 1 spot before I was going to...
So instead of saying "thank you," he could have as easily used that other word ending in 'k!' -- just like I did:
Congratulations- you were correct in concluding that you were fully worthy of the second "F***-Me-Award" when selecting Chelios at slot 56. If available, he would have surely been mine at #58. (Seibert was my 'consolation-prize.')
... But, as TDMM has made clear, he wouldn't have been available.

Then, there's this musing:
Wow, Charlie Gardiner isn't getting picked? Madness
which (as can be seen above) is a madness that overtakes us all this time EVERY year...

Thanks, but I have bad news: I won't be able to do it in 2021. Too busy all around.

Clarification: If you want me to I can get you guys and gals a draft order again and also divisional assignments. That's a bit of work, but once the draft starts it's done. I won't have the capacity to tally votes round after round in 2021 though.

I've been considering we should switch to an automated like google forums. Would tremendously speed up vote tallying

Before we had an outside person like Theo to tally votes, we just had veteran GMs from opposing conferences split the tally work (i.e. each GM tallies the votes from the conference he is not in). Then you just have to find someone to tally the Final, which generally isn't too difficult.

I regretted my Kane pick for a while during the draft, especially since I still had no goalie and i had just barred myself from picking Gardiner. But ultimately he gave an elite 2nd line winger to Béliveau, which enabled me to "cheat" with Northcott. It all turned out for the best.

I liked Delvecchio for your team as it gave you an infrequently-penalized Iron Man to help you weather Lindros & Malkin injuries.
Ones I feel good about
I felt good about...

1) Montreal: Ken Dryden @ 154. I don't smoke, but I felt like firing one up after that selection.
2) Toronto: Frank Mahovlich @ 87. Liked the value, liked the fit (w/Messier & Iginla).

Felt good- but weren't exactly unanticipated sorties...
1) Chicago: Earl Seibert @ 63.
2) New York Rangers: Bill Gadsby @ 82.

I liked it- but he's always going to divide opinions:
Detroit: Sergei Fedorov @ 111.

The Land of Meh- Boston: Johnny Bucyk @ 135.
