October 31: On this day in 1942, the Leafs opened their regular season schedule in the month of October for the first time and kicked off their first game in the "Original Six" era with a 7-2 victory over the visiting New York Rangers.

Gaye Stewart led the Leafs with 2 goals and an assist. Bucko McDonald led the Leafs with D with 2 assists and 2 minutes in penalties.

Interestingly, both teams played with only 3 defensemen for the entire game.

November 1: On this day in 1977, the Leafs traded Inge Hammarstrom to the St. Louis Blues for Jerry Butler. Hammarstrom was the other Swede that the Leafs had signed as a free agent in 1973 on the same day they signed future Hall-of-Famer Borje Salming.

Jerry Butler was later traded to the Canucks along with Tiger Williams bringing back Rick Vaive (first Leaf to score 50 goals) and Bill Derlego.

Thanks Inge.

Inge was the guy who first prompted the quote about "going into the corner with eggs in his pocket and coming out with none of them broken". At least that's how I remember it.
That’s right, quote from Harold Ballard, his own teams owner no less. His comment was meant more of an insult than remarking on his elusiveness. Inge was a solid 20-20 middle six guy. High skill but as a trailblazing European into the NHL, he was met with sometimes xenophobic welcome. And when that comes from your teams owner, your up against it from the start. He was one of my favourite players of that era.

Wonder if we have fans were alive during that game?

The oldest posters I've seen here were fans from the late 50s early 60s

1942 is so long ago it's really hard to imagine games from then(in terms of play, fans)

Crazy Kessel joining was 11 years ago. One of those 'where does the time go?' moments.

November 9: On this day in 1996, Wendel Clark tied a Leaf team record with four points in one period. In a 7-3 victory over Edmonton, Clark scored four goals. It was his 8th and final hat trick in the Blue & White.

Charlie Conacher became the first player in Maple Leafs history to score 100 goals, on Nov. 9, 1933, in a 6-1 win over the Bruins. He scored exactly 200 goals in his nine seasons in Toronto before traded to the Red Wings in 1939.

Syl Apps scored the fourth of his six career regular-season hat tricks, on Nov. 9, 1946, to help beat the Rangers 4-2 at Maple Leaf Gardens.

Exactly one year later, Nov. 9, 1947, goaltender Turk Broda recorded his 38th career shutout in a 6-0 road win in Detroit. He retired in 1952 with 61 shutouts, which are still the most in franchise history.
