I'm surprised that there hasn't been a thread devoted to this yet (at least not one that I've seen). Being that I have access to more "vintage" print than the average person (I think?) I'd like to take this opportunity to give back to the board that I continue to learn so much from...

Basically, if you have scans/pictures/images of older books, newspapers, magazines, etc. that could possibly help in the research of the history of our great game then please feel free to post it here...especially welcomed (I would assume) are things that include historic scouting reports, reasons/rumors for/about trades/transactions, historical formation of the game and its rules and the like...

I'll try to do this as organized as possible...

Once upon a time, I had a few pieces in this thread: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=792759

In there, you've got a Sports Illustrated article from 1956 regarding Jean Beliveau and the Montreal Canadiens, coverage of the 1939 Stanley Cup Finals and some other goodies, IIRC...

I'm just going to go in the order in which I scanned and try to organize second...

Start off with a favorite, Bobby Orr tidbits...maybe old news, but it's a good start I feel... from the book "Remembering Bobby Orr" by Craig MacInnis 1999 pgs 81-83, 87-88. References to historic defensemen and their best-known traits: the bodychecking of Black Jack Stewart and Bob Baun, the mean streak of Denis Potvin, Sprague Cleghorn, and Eddie Shore, and "superior in the tactics of pure defensive hockey" of Jimmy Thomson, Bob Goldham, Hap Day and Lionel Hitchman. Plus Scotty Bowman's stamp of approval for Orr's defensive game. About Doug Harvey controlling the pace of the game, bringing it to a standstill.

The Sporting News "North Stars, Blues Dominate NHL's Western All-Stars" by Ben Henkey - April 20, 1968 - Talks about the price expansion clubs had to pay per player they selected in the expansion draft. Also, tidbits regarding some of the first all-stars on the other side of the expansion era.

The Sporting News "Hot Action for Policemen In Stanley Cup Struggles" by Leo Monahan - April 20, 1968 - talks about enforcers "policemen" of the era...John Ferguson, Reggie Fleming, Gordie Howe "roughest of all"... it all finishes the article above re: Western Division All-Stars in the bottom-right corner.

Sport magazine "Sportalk" February 1947 begins (unseen) "Johnny Mariucci, ace defenseman of the Chicago Black Hawks, was talking to Bruce Jacobs, an Associate Editor of SPORT. "You know," said Johnny,..." [scan follows]

Sorry, magic wand scanner wasn't cooperating with a bit of a water damaged magazine page. Readable, but just barely. It talks about the 3 American players in the NHL in 1947. Two are from Eveleth, Minnesota (Frank Brimsek and Johnny Mariucci) and the third is Bill Moe (Massachusetts). Jokes (?) that Brimsek, when confronted, says he's from Regina. Talks about USHL product Anton Nemanick being the next Brimsek.

Sport magazine "Bentley Brothers of the Black Hawks" by Tom Siler - February 1947

Great feature on the Bentley brothers (Max and Doug) and their exploits. Very funny part towards the end regarding Max Bentley being a hypochondriac (sp?).

Goal magazine (Feb. 1978) "Surplus of Goalies a Valuable Commodity" from The Hockey News by Norman MacLean - discusses the Rangers crowded crease in the late 1970's with some tidbits that could piece together barebones scouting reports perhaps...John Davidson, Wayne Thomas, Doug Soetaert, Hardy Astrom, Lindsay Middlebrook. References when Frank Boucher used to change goalies with his line for a stretch in 1946 (Chuck Rayner and Sugar Jim Henry).

Goal magazine (Feb. 1978) "Maloney Stands Tall on Ranger Backline" from New York Post by Hugh Delano - talks about Dave Maloney and how Bobby Orr found him at a summer hockey camp in ~1971 and how he predicted great things for him. Nice feature on Maloney's career to date.

Goal magazine (Feb. 1978) "Pat Hickey: He Comes at You From All Directions" from The Newark Star Ledger by Walt MacPeek - I scanned this only because of the recent (June 2011) re-discussion of ice time for players before ice time was an official stat. This article makes a couple of references to it and Hickey's goals per minute ratio. You can probably piece together his game through the article as well, as he may have been a forgotten of the 70's and 80's...

Sport magazine (March 1961) "Hockey's Last Richard" by Larry Klein. Discusses Maurice Richard's retirement and Henri Richard's impending emergence. Maurice is referred to as the best player of all-time, Henri is referenced to be the fastest player of all-time. Quality article that discusses many things and gives good talent tidbits for both Richards (not that they'll be too shocking of news for here)...gives an interesting comparison between each player's first five years in the league that doesn't sound too unlike a discussion you'd see here...

Sport magazine (March 1961) "Sportalk: Bower Improves With Age" - just a little piece about Johnny Bower and his late start and how he was reportedly ready for retirement in 1961 (instead, he plays the rest of the decade as we know).

Sport magazine (January 1954) "The Rangers' Mr. Bones" by Arch Murray - nice feature on Rangers center Don "Bones" Raleigh. Great information on him, not sure how much is remembered or known about him on this board considering his relatively brief career that spanned the mid/late 40's to the mid 50's and the fact he wasn't a superstar by any means. Might help an ATD perhaps...?

Sport magazine (1962) "Who's Best in Sports '62" issue with just some excerpts of stars that I pulled out...Howe I yanked because of Sid Abel's quote about maybe moving him to center then defense (!). Plante is referenced as being the first help out from outside the crease, interestingly, he is credited with 5 career assists at the time of print (1962) but according to hockey-reference he only has 1 at this point in his career. Andy Bathgate talks about quitting the league because of the lack of enforcement of penalties, players are going to get killed from boarding and spearing incidents. Was set on quitting and playing professional golf.

Iowa Legionaire newspaper (February 22, 1929) "Ice Hockey Enables Post to Put Over Big Projects" - just a little local article regarding local hockey. Outlines the general concept of hockey early on and its origins ("Ice-hockey is an old game, originally played by the Indians in Canada").

    Bandwith.

Some discipline by topic and / or indexing with limits on bandwith would help as well as guidance about posting articles in other languages - accepting French newspapers could really help.

A few other considerations should be addressed. Probably best done via a group or PM format.

Well, I work at a warehouse that specializes in selling old magazines and newspaper on eBay...so what I own is different than what I have access to...

For instance, I don't own this and it has since been purchased by a supposedly nice man from Saskatoon but just before it went out the door I took the time to make some scans (a tiny bit of quality problems, but if you zoom in you should be alright)...

These are from a newspaper called the "Saskatoon Star" from January & February of 1913 (pre-NHL game summaries and articles forthcoming).

Again, Saskatoon Star newspaper from 1913:

Players of note, among many, we'll have Sprague Cleghorn, Odie Cleghorn, Newsy Lalonde, Punch Broadbent, Georges Vezina, Jack Laviolette, Joe Hall, Clint Benedict, Roberts, Tommy Dunderdale, Lester Patrick and many more...

Most game summaries give lineups (often full lineups with the few substitutions that were made), referees, many I believe had attendance, and many seem to reference tempo and ice conditions. You also get some nice clues as to dominance and "scouting reports" as well in some of the longer ones.

Also, it notes a transition phase from seven-man to six-man hockey, which is a little inconsistent during the season...in fact, I believe one game notes that half was played 7v7 and half was played 6v6 (!)...

    1) 1/8/13 - Ed Carpenter signs with Moncton (sent to Hockey-Reference, it was missing from their transaction page) + hints of other minor transactions.
