Why would someone that's never called a game in English be hired to call professional hockey games in English? Is this an equality thing? Are there no competent, experienced PBP announcers out there?

I honestly don't even know how bad the Oilers truly were, because I was so confused watching the broadcast.

Would've made more sense if I was drunk

The PBP was better than the product on the ice.

Make of that what you will.

I thought it implied he was done with the Edmonton Oilers not SN.

    Who knows lol.

Don’t know what it is that bothered you guys so much, I thought Singh was perfectly fine, and appreciated the fact that he didn’t get overly excited and exaggerate his calls. Much rather listen to him calling games than what we’re about to get with Jack.

it was way toooooooo boring. He didn't even call out major milestones in the game aka no last minute in the periods, waited almost 15 seconds to say Edmonton pulled the goalie. It was a poor performance.

There also seemed to be no colour guy. I missed banter and interesting facts.

Quinn was good, he was the best regional sports net guy and has been since the early 2000's.

You guys didn't know what you had.

Plus he made mistakes, one of the first calls of the game he called Koekkoek Jones, soon after he said Kahun passed it to Kahun, playing both wings simultaneously... I don’t care about a slip here and there ( I think people rag on Quinn for the odd slip of the tongue?) but it wasn’t great. Frankly this pales relative to how dull he made the game seem... Quinn is underrated.

I really don’t care how decent or even eloquent his English is. I think that is kind of a low bar for someone expected to commentate a pro game. What’s he talking about when there are lulls in the game? How is he keeping us engaged? I mean, he isn’t. I honestly can’t believe there are people Here living in a reality where Quinn isn’t superior.

he will get better, you could tell he was nervous. But yes, I miss Quinn and long for the Quinn Ferrero days.

I thought Singh just didn't bring the energy needed especially given there are no fans in the building so it's a double whammy. It wasn't the most exciting game last night, fair enough, but I want to hear more enthusiasm when somebody gets rocked, or there's a good chance that the goalie saves. Listening to Gord Miller call the WJC games, then listening to Singh last night there is a big discrepancy in the excitement level. Miller calls the game such that you're on the edge of your seat....Singh, not so much.

Perhaps it was just nerves from Singh but I want to hear some emotion and excitement and keep me engaged even when there's a lull. It can't just be on goal calls where he gets loud. I hope he brings it more on future broadcasts.

I think Debrusk really developed into a solid pair with Quinn too, but definitely the Ferraro days were another level. Sad that we’ve come here from there. There have been horrible commentators in Calgary and a lot of other Canadian cities and I actually was kinda proud of our boys for putting together a decent broadcast— and it definitely made the horror show years easier to swallow.

Yeah Ferraro is my favourite colour commentator. Listening to him and Gord Miller call the WJCs is so good. Ferraro's opinionated but usually his takes are spot on and at least he sees the game and calls it from the perspective of somebody who played in the NHL and knows the ins and outs of the game.

It’s an equality/diversity thing. Which I can see. Give him a shot. But he was awful to listen to. But because it’s a equality/diversity thing it likely won’t get much criticism in the public forum.

It was ******* horrible. The worst play by play I’ve ever listened to in my 20 years of watching/listening. Any word on when they are going to have Michaels call the game. It absolutely crazy that I’m praying he’s on the broadcast tonight instead.

I don’t think a national broadcast on opening night is really the best place for a PBP announcer to be learning on the job.
He was the PBP version of Cassie Campbell IMO.

I want to believe that isn’t the case. The opening night of the best pro league in the world is not the place to be inserting diversity hires. I want to believe that he was a fill in when other plans fell through. Or even that someone at SN liked his work and thought he could do the job. If it was a straight up diversity thing that’s pretty sad.

I liked Quinn, a lot. He and Debrusk were very good together. Singh was dull, lifeless and non engaging with Debrusk.

He's done 1200 games in Punjabi, hardly "learning on the job" , maybe give him a couple games to get in the groove in english. those yearning for micheals obviously don't have am radio or working ears.

I liked Quinn. I’m not gonna crap on the new guy, but it was an unnecessary change to begin with.

learning on the job doing PBP in a second language. Maybe they should have given him some games that weren’t opening night of a national game for him to find his groove in English. I have enjoyed his contributions to panels and work he’s done in the past. It’s not that I don’t like him as a hockey broadcast member. He just left a lot to be desired last night. Hopefully he gets better.

Was this an emergency thing? Was Michaels one of the people not allowed into the building due to the covid testing or something? I could've sworn he was supposed to be doing these this year.

I thought Singh did a horrific job, to a point where I was pleading with whoever the commentary broadcast God is to bring back Quinn. I shudder...
