I’m kind of excited to see how Jack does. I didn’t like him when he first got the job but I like him now for some reason. I think he got started in wrestling and you can tell from his voice, it’s very exaggerated and cringe inducing at times. But without a crowd in the stands this season I think Jack might be a good choice, he just brings extra energy to big moments, he really knows when to punch it up. Most play by play guys are pretty boring, so this might be fun. Glad Debrusk is around too, always been a fan. He’s a pretty measured guy, respectable guy too I just like him overall lol.
I just looked at the call letters for St. Paul (CHLW) and saw that they're been assigned to Barriere, B.C., so I'm not sure how up to date the list is.
I hope they let Remenda go to that big pasture for broken down broadcast personalities - or Calgary as it's commonly referred to.
I like Jack. Maybe he won't talk as much because his partner Bob never was too quick on the take so he had to fill in the blanks. Quinn is spokesman for the decade of darkness glad he's gone.
Yeah, I remember that game. Dude, you listen to those highlights and he's automatically 1000% better than Quinn ever was (esp the end of the game) despite the few annoyances that he does. He kept up with the play well, he showed some emotion and passion when there was some good scoring chances and seemed pretty comfortable in the role. We will see how he fairs but he's already a huge upgrade in my eyes. For the first time in years I actually won't mind watching Oilers home feeds. lol
If you're not getting enough information from a play by play guy maybe you should look at the color guy. Also, its blasphemy here but there was a reason why Rod did not do TV in his later years.
I don't think it was the colour guys. Hockey is a fast paced sport and when a PBP person is finding it hard to remember things while trying to keep up the pace, it's about time to call it a career. Vin Scully lasted a long time in baseball but it's a slower paced game with short bursts of action.
Sounds like the new ched guy should be good, dd we know who's doing radio color? I understand Bob is now official Mediterranean chicken pizza gopher and intermission filler (he better not take hometown boy genes minutes, hes puny. )just disappointed i'll have to listen to passing it up the gut repeatedly on tv broadcasts, I guess its a win I've got lots of projects to do at the shop, tune in the ched.
Nope, wish he had though. Guy lives in Saskatoon (born and raised), so he does relief work on 650CKOM (Talk Radio). The past few years he has subbed for Brent Loucks Morning guy and John Gormley talk show host. At times he’s a bit tough to take in these environments, but in an odd way he seems to be better suited than for his sports gig. It’s funny though, no matter what the topic or who he is subbing for he can invariably worm in some reference to his days in San Jose either living or coaching. One of his kids is/was (I don’t recall if he’s still there) is a segment producer at the station as well.
I didn't mind him at all in this vid. Funny that A. it was Mike Smith as the goalie and B. the last goal he gave up by wandering out of his crease in typical fashion...
It's hard to get more info from the play-by-play guy when he won't shut up talking about college football, personal anecdotes, etc. And then the colour guy piles on with more irrelevant stupidity.
I have not read through this whole thread, please do not tell me michaels is doing tv now. Please for the love of god.
I love that Michaels is an Oilers Homer. In a season this stressful we need a Homer announcer. God knows the Flames have enough of them at SportsNet.
All it makes me think is the Oilers and Sportsnet don't give a f*** about what actual hockey fans want. I really hope he tone's all of the garbage yelling, rambling, and ridiculous descriptions down and just calls the f***ing game. I don't get it most of the dudes I've talked to don't like him. I think they want his excitement to appeal to casual fans. You'd think the excitement around Cuthbert would make it clear his style won't be popular as he's like the exact f***ing opposite. Sportsnet is and always has been a Mickey Mouse operation. It's a lazy decision and I bet he was cheap. I hate shitting on people and I hope he proves me wrong but I think he just flat out sucks on the radio.
I get where you are coming from but I don't care, it's annoying to watch. Homers=Idiots, I want objective analysis. Debrusk, Brown, and Ferraro are good because they stay fair despite any potential bias. I don't want a narrative I want an honest evaluation. I would be so annoyed having to listen to analysis as biased as Francis, Hrudy, and Campbell. I stopped watching most Sportsnet intermissions years ago because it's so dumb. I find Stauffer and his constant narrative building annoying as f*** too. I just want some legit sports journalism, is that too much to ask?
DeBrusk - super smooth communicator, looks for positives, will selectively point out warts, never piles on. Ferraro - funny, more direct, willing to rip home or away team. Mike Johnson - most underrated color commentator, similar to Ray. He is willing to be critical of the players in the home market. Remenda - actually has some good insights at times, stylistically tough for lots of people. Needed to wean out the Sharks illustrations. Stauffer - pop culture references, willing to call out players during the broadcast, he'll say the guy's name who makes a mistake, not "the defence" or "the Oilers". Lots of home broadcasters won't. Grinder. Insider. Craig Button - highly knowledgeable, grinder, willing to rip home market, looks for positives. Cassie - perhaps the worst. "Insights" are way off. Should look into career with Sobey's not just commercials. Hrudey - some good anecdotes, feel he added more in the past. Seems like super nice guy. The CBC panel was quite vanilla besides Bieska and Burke in the Bubble.
