"Remarkably, the Oilers have trailed by a goal on no fewer than ten different occasions, and have been able to generate the tying goal each time, usually in short order. Overall, they have trailed on the scoreboard for just 39 minutes and 58 seconds, over which span they have outscored their combined opponents 10-0!"

Player grades: McDavid, Draisaitl break open another one as Edmonton Oilers come from behind to win yet again

So.. the trick to playing the Oilers is to NOT score first (let Oilers do it) and play come from behind, right?

It is a bit of a weird stat though, i would not consider a one goal deficit that big of a deal. They were down by 1 in all their games but scored pretty quickly to tie it and did not really face a huge deficit through their first 5 games.

Its not like their having miracle come backs down by 2 or 3 with 5 minutes left. Its a little bit of an overblown achievement.

Yup. They've spent 41 minutes trailing so far this season which is the six least in the league.

Interestingly enough, they're actually leading the league in minutes while tied with 173:35.

Sounds like a Tippett team. Phoenix was always one of those annoying clubs that did nothing for 40 minutes and keep the game close then break it open in the third and you wonder how the hell they won that game. Granted the Oilers were pretty dominant against the Rangers in the third, but the other games could have gone either way, and they have been lucky a few games.

Coming back shows resillience and that's what a team needs to go deep in the post season. It is nice to throw it in the face of fans around the league that the Oilers are finally the best team in the entire league. GOILERS

Real GM might deserve more of the credit. All of Holland's pick ups (and there's alot that's been inserted into this lineup) have worked out exactly as planned. PKers were brought in to PK and are getting it done. Bottom 6ers were brought in to add speed and chip in every now and then and they have. Goalie brought in to help Kosko to make them both better with a lighter work load is working. Neal was brought in, and we all know how that's going.

That’s an interesting way to say that McDavid carried his team to 5 straight wins.

Sorry that's nothing like this. That's like saying you remember when Dave Andreychuk scored 54 goals in one season in comparison to Gretzky's record of 92 in one season.
It is though, but go off. Just better hope your season doesn't end the same way, though it probably will.:laugh:

He's honestly not even the best player on the team right now. That would be Draisaitl.

McDavid is still doing his thing but he's a little rusty with his passing and shooting because he had to rehab all summer.

McDavid contributed as always. Carried this team? No. If anyone is carrying this team right now anyways it's Draisaitl. But McDrai alone wouldn't have made this a 5-0 run. Unless McDrai is making timely saves and running a 100% PK by themselves?

5 comeback wins = 2 comeback wins. And 54 goals = 92 goals. There's records and there's non records.

The good news is that the Oilers will set another record when they become the first team to miss the playoffs after opening the season with 5 comeback wins.
History dictates they're due this cut.

Time will tell if what's happening is legit. If it turns out to be, such remarks will be fun to revisit.

I mostly said it in jest. Lets be honest here .. the Oilers dont exactly have a great track record in the last 10 years.

Having said that, they are a Canadian team and id love to see them do well.

Clearly a comment from someone looking only at the box score.

No doubt McDavid has been strong. And his goal against Jersey clearly won the game.

But there's been some legitimate depth shown from elsewhere in the roster, and more structure than we've seen in some time.

I'm being very honest. :)

I'm not getting over-excited here, much like many of my Oilers brethren. The pace obviously can't be maintained. But it's been fun hockey to watch for a change. And the new players - as much of an intriguing experiment as they've been - are paying off.

The most remarkable thing to me is how they've played well defensively. The Oilers have long been seen as having one of the worst bluelines. Then we lost Larsson. But Bear and Persson have been solid and surprising.

Honestly they’ve only deserved to win 3 of the 5 games per the underlying metrics. They were evidently the worse team on the ice against both Vancouver and New Jersey.

That being said, I expect the them contend for a playoff spot. McDavid and Draisaitl are too good as individual talents and Nurse + Klefbom are giving them a lot of stability on the back end as they enter their primes.

As a Leafs fan, I’d be interested in a Kapanen for Larsson swap once the latter comes back and we get Hyman back.

What does history or track record have anything to do with it?

They are by all accounts a 3-2 team that due to puck luck and key goaltending have gone 5-0.

If they were 0-5 but had a ~60% all strengths Corsi, Fenwick, SF, xGF, SCF and HDCF then they are just extremely unlucky.

It goes both ways.

Cool story. Not particularly relevant but cool.

Lol it’s every bit relevant.

Things like track record, history, culture, etc should be reflected in advanced stats when evaluating a team. That is the bottom line.

The Buffalo Sabres are a better team and *more likely* to maintain their early-season play than the Oilers. It doesn’t matter that the Oilers have made the playoffs more recently.

Its way to early to draw any conclusions, but it looks good out there and i enjoy every minute it last!

After cristmas when teams gearing up and the old core in teams has shaken off some rust, it will get hard to win games.
We are also top heavy. any injury there would hurt as hell, though i like our bottom lines so far, killing time and forecheck well.

The D depht 4-6 is great with no No 1 D, Klefbom is the closest one! The goalie situaton can go either way, no reliable no 1 , more like 2 great backups, but who knows, confidence is the 6th gear for goalies!

Bubble team, 45-55, misses out with 2-3 points, good though that the other in the division has a lousy start!

Plan the cup parade Oiler fans, the Oilers are going to go 82-0 and will bring the cup back to Canada.
The Edmonton Oilers is our only hope for the cup as a nation. We Canadians have been left at the alter many times, have our best players pillaged and taken into the states where they thrive and become men. The manliest of men. The Edmonton Oilers bucked that trend drafting the best player since Mario- another GTA god when the numbers “15-4-6-1” trembled from uncle Gary’s mouth on the fateful day of April 18, 2015. We also drafted a player that changed the landscape, opened the eyes of another Nation and giving a country of 80+ million hope in Germany.

Oilers fans in Edmonton, 75% of the people in city of Calgary and the millions, and MILLIONS of Oilers fans around the world will have paraded from jasper ave here in Edmonton to 17th ave SW in Calgary to Times Square in NYC and Yonge street/Dundas Square in the 6ix. Fans of teams no one cares about will parade down their major streets, chanting “baby we made it” and convert to being an Oilers fan. Life from then on will be great, a future to look forward to. One would call it “their best life”.

Oilers will make hockey great again in the great white north.

We are 5-0 baby. 93 more wins pls. The world is waiting.
