OHL Future Watch: Kingston Frontenacs

Kingston is being built around Shane Wright-an exceptional player who undoubtedly will be the #1 pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. They need to accumulate assets and players that all gear towards the 2021-22 season. For a team so poor the past 2 years, they do not have a lot of assets to work with.

Forwards
Shane Wright is a special player, who at 16 years of age, could possibly be a top 5 player in the league. They are accumulating some forwards with skill to play with him. Martin Chromiak (2002, LW) could be a 1st round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. Zayde Wisdom (2002, RW) is a perfect complement to Wright and will be a top 3 round pick in this year’s draft. Vitali Pinchuk (2002, LW) is another import who was impressive this past season and will be drafted this year. Jordan Frasca (2001, C) is a big two way centre who had 43 points last season. 1st round pick Paul Ludwinski (2004, C) is tremendously talented and is a potential first round NHL pick in 2022. Francesco Arcuri (2003) will take some steps forward this season.

Defense
Kingston’s top 2 defensemen were both overagers last season. Jake Murray (2002, RD) has to become the top pair defenseman they envisioned when they drafted him in the first round in 2018. Evan Brand (2001) is big, but produced 3 points last season. Lucas Peric (2001) and Ethan Ritchie (2002) are depth defensemen at best. Braden Hache is a young defenseman who shows promise. They need to make some trades with some of their depth at forward or find some overage defensemen who can help bridge the gap in order to take a step forward this season.

Goaltenders
Ryan Dugas (2001) played 32 games last season and struggled behind a weak defense. The fact that Kingston did not draft a goaltender before the 9th round of this year’s OHL draft may indicate that they are going to try to trade for a goaltender with a team that has some depth, such as Barrie or Hamilton.

Draft Capital
Kingston went for it a couple of years ago and been trying to replenish their draft stock in the years that followed. They have two 2021 and 2024 2nd round picks. They need to use their forward depth and these picks to try to address their weak defense. Also, possibly look for them to try to pry Brennan Othmann from Flint to reunite him with Wright.

In conclusion, Kingston has the best asset in the league to build around in exceptional player Shane Wright. They have spent the money to hire an NHL-calibre coach in Paul McFarland, who was a lead assistant with the Leafs last season. Unless they improve the defense though, this will be another building year for the Frontenacs.
