OHL Future Watch: Guelph Storm

The Guelph Storm’s season depends on the potential return of Montreal 3rd rounder Cam Hillis (2000, C) and/or Nico Daws (2000, G). Both would be overagers and would be two of the top players at their positions in the OHL. They are going to need to decide whether their window is now or next season.

Forwards
Guelph also has overage forwards Pavel Gogolev (96 points) and Eric Uba (58 points) who will be their top forwards next season. They need talented Andrei Bakanov (2002, LW) and Danny Zhilkin (2003, C) to take major step forwards. The future is bright with Jacob Maillet (2003, C), Matthew Poitras (2004, C) and hometown 3rd round pick Jake Karabela (2004, C). If they can get any of their US Prospects to report, such as 2019 6th rounder Jack Devine (2003, C), or 2019 14th rounder Sasha Pastujov (2003, LW), this group gets a lot deeper.

Defense
Martin Has (2001, LD) and Daniil Chayka (2002, LD) anchor the Storm blueline. Luke Profaca (2002, RD), Michael Bianconi (2002, LD) and Zack Terry (2002, LD) all need to take huge steps forward for the Storm to compete this season. 2nd rounder Michael Buchinger (2004) is talented, but small and will need time to develop. Look for the Storm to make a move for a veteran 2001 defenseman to stabilize the blueline and bring some experience while the young D-corps develop.

Goaltender
Obviously Nico Daws (2000) is the key returnee. He is currently undrafted, but will surely be selected in the 2020 NHL Draft. How high he goes will determine whether the team wants him in the AHL, or will return him to the Storm. Owen Bennett (2002) played 27 games this year and there was a significant drop off between him and Daws. Guelph may look to make a move for a veteran goaltender before the season to stabilize the position. 2020 5th rounder Jacob Oster (2004) is their top prospect in the net.

Draft Capital
Guelph has all their future 2nd round picks, including an extra one in 2023. They are in good shape, even though they made some key deals win they won the OHL title.

In conclusion, the Storm will probably see who comes back, and then at the trade deadline either make a move for a player, or unload their overagers for younger players or draft picks. Will they auction Daws off to the highest bidder if he is returned?

Good summary, love your series. Looking forward to your thoughts on the 67's. Just one note, I don't believe Chayka counts as an import.
