So i honestly didnt realize you get a penalty for losing an offside challenge. This seems absolutely stupid to me. Why on earth should a penalty be handed out?

To keep teams from challenging every play that doesn't go their way. A better question is, why does the league scrutinize the blue line to the millimeter but icing is dealt with as "meh close enough".

The NHL realized that they put a stupid rule into the game. They don't want to completely get rid of it at least yet so they try to reduce the challenges this way.

    It's literally delaying the game.

They need to just get rid of challenges.

It does this even when a challenge is won. Especially when the infraction took place up to a minute prior to the goal in question and the clock has to go back.
