So the team with the worst goaltending in the league doesn't have good overall defensive numbers? Golly!

Essentially the metrics that judge the defense itself reflect highly and should see improvement with the stabilized bottom pairing. But everything that looks poor is more of a reflection of the dumpster fire between the goalposts.

I'd expect that if Darling performs adequately well and Ward does decently enough as the backup, all of the bottom half of the chart should climb several spots in those ratings.

Srsly tho. I'm sure these numbers surprise no one.

Well their shot suppression metrics minus high danger is very good, thus I thought they would at least be better than almost bottom 10 lol. But yeah their goals against metrics killed them. For example Carolina's shot suppression metrics is better than a lot of the teams in front of them (Edmonton, Ottawa, Chicago, Columbus), but their goals against metrics really killed them, as the 4 teams mentioned above have fantastic goals against metrics.

We also had a pretty bad bottom pair, defensively speaking, so that probably contributed to actual defensive metrics. Hopefully rolling out the Fleury-TVR pairing will fix that.

So it's really not ranking the defense itself so much as a combination of defense and goalrending...a little misleading honestly. Maybe something more along the line goal protection/goal suppression? Though your goalie is the "last line of defense" so I guess that works?

Our goalrending is without equal.

While goalies allow goals, defense has a role in the goalie allowing the goal. Not every shot is of equal quality even the shots in the exact same location. There are so many variables, so that's why I still included goals against as a factor, just they make up only a slight portion of the rankings whereas shot suppression makes up the vast majority. For those who don't watch games, adding the goals against metric in a defensive ranking is still important, because it gives them the indication of whether it's the goalie being terrible, the true quality of chances and shots allowed, or both.

You're confusing defense with defensemen. Goaltenders are definitely a member of the defense.

Well goaltender isn't really part of the defense overall, but forwards absolutely are. Goals against is a factor influenced by both goalies and players, more so goalies, but players have an effect thus I still factored them in for my calculations. Besides goalies technically have an effect on shots metrics as well just saying (Rebound control, puck moving, puck tracking, etc.), so you might as well say you cannot measure true defense with just stats.

Either way you're correct that people confuse defense with defenseman too often. I constantly have to tell people that Nashville does not have the league's best defense even if they have the league's best defenseman (And even then that's debatable, it's more so their top 4 that's the undisputed best than their entire blueline).
