Chip tweeted yesterday that Necas is leaning towards playing in Czech Republic versus playing in the OHL next season. I think that's the right choice.

If he can get lots of minutes and have his role grow then I'm happy. Seen it too many times where a kid gets five minutes a game over there. Who can develop with that kind of ice time.

From what I've seen of him, the OHL would be a poor fit. He needs to be playing against men.

The ice time concern is valid, though. Hopefully he's in a situation where he can be (or become) the go-to guy.

Matt Cullen would've been a nice add. Can't say I blame him for wanting to finish his career in Minnesota though.

A first round pick in an Euro league, even a young one, tend to get enough utilisation. The level of talent at that point is very competitive compared to other players.

At this point Cullen is a 4C, albeit a good one at that. His role with the Pens was ~11min/game on the 4th line and 2min/game on the PK. With Staal and Kruger (and Lindholm and Nordstrom, Aho, McGinn, Jooris, etc..) on the PK, and Kruger as the 4th line C, I don't see a fit for Cullen. If we hadn't traded for Kruger, he'd have been a good add to the Canes, but once we got Kruger, who is a superior player even if he is more expensive, any slot for Cullen was really gone.

I think he's at a point where he just wants to be home in Minnesota anyhow, so don't think it would have been a possibility anyhow. Amazing to think that of all the guys on that 05/06 team, he's one that is still playing in his 40s. I think Whitney hung them up at 42? Wesley and Brindy hung them up at 39? Too lazy to look up the rest.

Have you seen any update on his injury?

EDIT: A quick search showed this. Not much, but seems to indicate it's not an issue.

Where will Necas play?

The Canes made center Martin Necas of the Czech Republic their first-round pick, 12th overall, in the June NHL draft. During the Canes’ prospects camp, Necas said he might stay home for another season with HC Kometa Brno in the Czech league, again playing on a line with former NHL forward Martin Erat.

Francis indicated Necas may stay put another season, saying, “As of now he would like to play in Czech. I let the player choose.”
.
.
Necas alter suffered an abdominal injury in a summer camp game between the Czech Republic and a Swiss team and had to be helped off the ice but Francis said, “He’s feeling good, with no issues.”

I have absolutely zero access to any news concerning the Czech league.

But I would assume that Martin Erat gets sufficient ToI, and thinking of Barkov with Jagr, that's probably a very good setup for Necas' development.

The fact that he scored 31 points in just 72 games while, like you say, only playing 13 minutes tells me he's probably still capable of being a good 3rd liner, and remember he can play wing too. But it's no great tragedy.

I'm glad Necas is staying home if it's true. I like the Euro's staying there as long as possible and reinforcing the skill game that they already play. I'm not really a fan of them coming over here to learn "our game", especially at 18 or younger.

I'd prefer Necas play in the OHL but that is selfishness as I'd like to watch him and the Czech league is about as obscure as you can get.

Too player dependent to say what is best. Coming to the CHL did Rask, Foegele, and Kuokkanen good IMO. Aho staying in the FEL was undoubtedly the best choice for him (not that he was ever in the CHL mix).

I really have no valuable input because I didn't watch Necas last year and I never watch Czech hockey. I'd assume if he stays there that he is 100% guaranteed top-6 minutes next year.

Coming to the CHL did Kuokkanen good

I realize you estimated this in your own opinion, but I wonder if this a widely held opinion. My impression of his time in the CHL last year as being well spent is debatable, but I am by no means well informed.

On my phone so it's a pain to link, but there's an article out with Sakic saying he is listening to Duchene offers but right now it's "quiet on all fronts."

Wonder if Bean + 1st does it and we can catch him in panic mode?

I actually watched a number of London games and he played well. He struggled towards the end of the regular season coming off a nationally-disappointing WJC showing. I think this combined with the WJC spotlight led to an air of disappointment.
He played very well in the Playoffs for London (led the team in points).

It is fairly rare for a 19 year old to make the AHL (albeit impossible for some CHLers due to age restricitons). For Kuokkanen to be considered at the same level as Gauthier or Roy the Canes would have to be encouraged by his development. One can argue that he might be more developed if he had stayed in the FEL, but the proof of success is in the presumed pudding

Unfortunately it is "quiet on all fronts" because Sakic's price was/is laughably high. If it were even remotely reasonable then 10 teams would be in deep discussions with them.

The only hope the Canes would have is Duchene demanding a trade. With most other interested teams (Montreal, NYI, etc.) making other moves (Drouin, Eberle, etc.) there might be lesser demand.

I think we're prettymuch down to us and Nashville as the suitors for Duchene at this point. NYI is going to be focused on re-signing Tavares and their big off-season move was Strome for Eberle. Montreal balked at Colorado's price for Duchene and Drouin was their big move. They do have the cap space to add Duchene, but not sure they have the assets to do so anymore since what depth they had is now forced in to much bigger roles then they should have been.

Us and Nashville are the two teams left standing with the need, the assets, and the cap space to take on Duchene that were ever serious contenders to land him (looking at you anyone that took Pittsburgh rumors seriously)

So I'm doing an NHL team ranking by defensive metrics (Aka #1 is best defensive, #30 is worst), and Carolina surprisingly came as 20th overall. They are definitely a good team in overall shot suppression, but their scoring chance suppression is very average, and their high danger suppression is below average. The main thing that hurt them was their goals against metrics. They are bottom 5 in every goals against metrics. With Darling as the starter, Ward as a backup instead, and an improved overall depth in defense (TVR and Fleury is easily better than whoever was the 3rd pairing last season) I hope the Canes rise even more, especially with their already good overall shot suppression metrics.

So the team with the worst goaltending in the league doesn't have good overall defensive numbers? Golly!

Srsly tho. I'm sure these numbers surprise no one.
