I know it's not what people are hoping for but this roster is realistic, IMO. Especially based on the comments made by Murray that the Senators were a "50 million dollar team". The team itself, salary-wise, will hover around exactly that amount.

We'll have an excellent and competitive roster that is within our budget. I did my best with estimates. I figured that Gonchar is outside our budget and we already have enough "D" men signed so we really don't have a choice.

Boro can be exchanged for a UFA defenseman at a minor increase in salary. If Ceci blows everyone away he'll count more towards the cap because of bonuses but his salary will be similar to Boro.

I put Alfie's salary at a similar level to Koivu and Selanne, it seemed the most fair/realistic. If Alfredsson doesn't come back, that opens up 3.8 million for Gonchar or another UFA winger/d-man which I think is also realistic for a second pairing guy or 2nd line RW.

Latendresse I had resigning with us for a guaranteed contract ( less total money) instead of bonuses on top of a $750,000 contract. He's done well here, seems to want to stay, and has developed some chemistry with our other young forwards. It's a no-brainer to me.

Condra gets a salary increase similar to what Kelly received at the same stage of his career and I see them as similar players, though Condra puts up less offence, the cap is also higher than when Kelly re-signed.

Wiercioch was the hardest to predict, the short season and injury last year will keep his value depressed so he'll likely agree to a 1-2 year bridge contract to increase his value. I doubt either Ottawa or Wiercioch will be looking for a long term extension because of the risk for both sides. Depending on how management views the situation he could cost up to 2.0 million on a 2 year contract, though I consider that unlikely.

Its certainly something everyone would want but the makeup of the team allows for us to be pretty successful without one. Latendresse, Conacher, Michalek, Greening, Neil and Zibanejad all go to the net with authority. The needed traffic to score goals is there. I wouldn't frown at improving that area and overall physicality of the forward group.

Though I believe Zibanejad is a better center than winger I wouldn't rule out an experiment where Zibby finds himself lining up with Spezza. They might complement each other. That opens up a spot to use Da Costa at center as well. Also, Stone is on the way. Definite top 6 power forward potential there.

I would rather use DaCosta as a winger than Zibanejad.

For the sole reason that Zibanejad's power game and physical ability would be much more destructive at the center position. Not to mention Z's defensive prowness.

DaCosta and Spezza could possibly work like Regin did with Spezza before.

It appears that in the next couple of years we're going to have an overwhelming amount of forwards coming up the pipes. I hope that next year we're able to start moving some of the players we've developed for picks for future years. I think this is the best way to ensure the continued success of the team. Keep developing solid players, take the best ones for ourselves, trade the rest for draft picks and keep the cycle going. I guess the unfortunate situation is when you start losing players to free agency, but that is just part of the game.

Some great insight into our line-ups for the next couple of years ITT.

I also lol'd at the idea of us trading back for Runbland. Is that actually a realistic possibility??

I'm thinking a pitch for Bobby Ryan should be made...right now we have a pipeline stocked full of prospects that can't all make the NHL with Ottawa (if they develop well). I wouldn't mind dangling our 1st + some top end prospects to get a legitimate top 6 winger like Ryan or another elite defender...the player coming back would depend on what we send the other way.

1st + Noesen + ??? for Bobby Ryan
Da Costa + Puempel + 3rd for Jonathon Blum
1st + Ceci + Noesen for Loui Eriksson
1st + Wiercioch + ??? for Erik Johnson
Something + something for Tomas Fleischmann

Those are all deals I wouldn't mind looking at.

Not sure you could really get much for him at this point. We want to leave some room below the contract limit, anyway, so might be best to just let him go. I don't see any future for him with the team any longer, and I don't expect him to get the chance to drive his value up, so there really isn't much of a choice, as I see it.

There's just no point. We are overflowing with forward talent, if more guys get brought in they have to be bonafide top 6 players or fill a very specific role like a face off specialist. We pretty well have a full complement of NHL forwards as is and I'd bet that at least one of Da Costa, Noesen, Stone, Prince, Pageau, Schnieder, Puempel, Cowick, Grant, Dzuirzynski et al will force the Sens hand at some point.

Regin would just be taking up a contract waiting to to waived. Time to move on. Good guy and good teammate but his time in Ottawa is coming to an end.

If both Alfie and Gonchar retire there is absolutely no reason NOT to keep Regin.

We're weaker on the backend than we are up front so any saved money should be invested on the defense instead of forwards. Re-signing Regin for cheap forward depth is a no brainer. Especially if we lose both Latendresse and Alfredsson and neither are replaced.

He plays two forward positions well. He's responsible on both ends of the ice and he has good puck skills.

We have oodles of cheap forward depth. We let Daugavins go for nothing because of that same reason. We have oodles of cheap everything. Money is certainly not an issue in this case.

I was originally going to try to refute the point that we'd be in good shape if Alfie, Latendresse, Condra and Regin all left but I proved myself "wrong"

We'd still have Da Costa, DD, Stone, Grant, and Hoffman as replacements as well as Noesen, Puempel, and Prince for injury replacements. It's not a perfect roster but it's alright:

Turris - Spezza - Michalek
Conacher - Z-Bad - Silfverberg
Greening - Smith - Neil
Hoffman - Da Costa - Stone

Ex: Kassian, DD, and Grant

We've iced much worse rosters than that one. We wouldn't have amazing depth anymore ( it wouldn't be bad though) but it's a legitimate NHL roster by any definition. Depending on the defense, we might actually be hitting the lower limit of the salary cap as well and depending on the coaching it might even make the playoffs. Not bad for a "worst case scenario".

Regin is in the same boat as Winchester and Shannon. No interest in resigning them. I would have preferred Winchester this season over Regin.

Agreed. It's unfortunate the way things went down for Winny...he would have been a good player for this team especially this year.

I think that Alfie comes back for one more year. He's had a few lackluster years with a team in rebuild-mode and I'm sure he want in on the Ottawa team moving forward.

He still works his ass off and makes smarter decisions than most other players on the ice on a nightly basis.

I bet he can play in a somewhat lesser role for two more years.:yo:

He's much better than Recchi was at the same age.

So judging by those future lines, safe to say that by the time the Ottawa Senators hit the ice for the 2013-2014 season, they'll have 3 scoring lines. Amazing. Who says bottom 6 get limited ice time? I'd like to see them get the same amount as the second line. What happens to Michalek? Does Latendresse get re-signed? Condra?
