Yes but only on a tryout once Portland's playoffs are over. It's unlikely he would make much of an impact as he's really young still and doesn't know the system. Next season it's NHL or juniors again, though.

As usual, Burgs is correct. Pouliot could be sent to WBS or even the big club on a tryout, just to practice with the team and be around a team who is making a pro-playoff run. He may even see any ice, but it would still be a great experience for him. Like I said, it's a win-win either way, no matter what happens.

Because he's a skilled, gritty RH shot winger with character and leadership who chose to be here. Wanting to make him a Pen beyond this season is anything but stupid.

1. Malkin and Letang are still the main priorities, and we have no idea how much or how long Iginla would want on his next deal. Shero obviously thought we could accommodate Parise making ~7.5 mil per long-term, so I don't see why Iginla would be an automatic non-starter.

2. Maybe he'd take a Doan-type deal to stay in a winning environment with elite centers. We'd be stupid not to pursue that.

3. Iginla is a much better scoring line winger than Dupuis. One is talented enough to be a go-to guy on a scoring line, and the other's best suited to a 3rd wheel role even in a best case scenario.

Agreed. And you don't give up a 1st and prospects, and NOT try to sign the guy. Doesn't make sense.

Yup, totally agree with both of you guys. And yes, I would expect Iginla to take a Doan-type deal to stay here. He's not going to go to some non-Cup Contender that needs to hit the salary floor just so he can make $6 million instead of $4.5 or thereabouts.

Has WBS decided on which Nailers they are going to bring up as Black Aces for the playoffs? If not, who would people here suspect?

I think what helps with salary negotiations with Iginla is that he has already had picked to be here. One could reasonably conclude that if he picked to be traded here, he'll pick to stay here once he's a free agent.

I'm hoping it's like the Guerin situation, comes to the Pens, likes what he sees and wants to stay for more than the "rental" year.

Portland beat Everett tonight to win their 1st round series 4 games to 2. Pouliot had at least 1 point in every game and leads all WHL defensemen in playoff scoring with 9 points.

Not to be outdone Anton Zlobin notched 3 assists tonight in Val d'Or's series-winning triple OT victory against P.E.I. He has 7 points in 6 games.

Anton is a points machine, all that guy does is produce in the Q. I know people aren't always impressed with the numbers in the Q, but I think he will surprise us all.

It's not that Zlobin is playing in the Q, it's that he doesn't really have any standout skills. Junior numbers shouldn't be taken as the main basis for a player's potential, as any Pens fan who followed the careers of Caputi, Jeffrey, or Pierro-Zabotel can attest.

I don't watch the kid all the time, but I've seen him play a few games and I'm not surprised he didn't make the Russian WJC team. He's not a write-off or anything, but people should temper their expectations. There's a reason he was passed over in one draft and still fell to the 6th round a year later.

You are correct. It just wrapped up. DP with the primary assist on the game winner.

P.S. Incredible avatar.

Heya, Mr. T,

Have you been able to watch any/some/most of the games? And, if so, can you give a bit of a scouting report on how DP played? Obviously his stats are impressive, but I'm curious to hear more...

There are a lot of guys that get passed, it's how hard they work after being drafted that you have to watch out for. I've heard people say he's been working harder at his overall game and trying to improve as a player. He's 20 soon, I think after this season he has to be looking to jump to WBS.

Putting up 160+ pts in 2yrs and winning a Memorial Cup, let's not completely write the guy off.

I remember when he was drafted and I scoured the web for info..

Kirk Luedeke of the New England Hockey Journal said:
... Superb hands, shot and offensive instincts. A human highlight reel, and when he gets it revved up with some open ice to work with, watch out. Finished the season with 23 goals and 45 points in 59 games. He took some adjustment time and also had some injury issues- he's very average sized at about 6-0, 170 pounds.

Shawinigan coach Erik Veilleux said:
"It took him until probably January last year to understand that he needed to play with more consistency in his game," said coach Eric Veilleux during our Memorial Cup Coach's Show on Tuesday night, "He's been great in learning, wanting to learn, and his work ethic changed totally from the beginning of 2010-11 to the beginning of training camp this season. He came in great physical condition, great shape. Scouts saw a consistency in his game from day one..."

The star winger, not exactly a defensive specialist, was worried that he might become a liability if the Cats lost the faceoff in the Knights zone.

"Go! Just go!," Shawinigan coach Eric Veilleux told him. "He went for 10 feet and came back. He's like, if we lose the faceoff and the puck gets out (of the zone) I'm coming off.

"I said, 'No problem, you have a deal.' We lost it, but the puck stayed there. He scored."

I heard he was left off because they wanted someone that was better at the 2-way game, his offense wasn't the issue or anything.

Zlobin turned 20 in February. My concern from reading the stat lines is that his goal scoring rate dropped off this season. He had 40 in 66 last season, but only 29 in 61 this season. He nearly doubled his assists this season so it's not as if his overall game stagnated, but his best chance to ever make the Pens would be as a finisher.

Ah-thank-a-you. Made it myself! As if that wasn't painfully obvious.

Whatever way you slice it, Zlobin wasn't good enough in his final year of eligibility to make an unspectacular Russian team. I'm not saying he'll never pan out, I'm just saying he's a pretty run-of-the-mill prospect from what I've seen, and a real long shot to do anything of consequence in the NHL.

He could surprise, but expectations need to be tempered. 160+ points in 2 years of Q action for a player his age is nothing to write home about.

He became an assist machine

Mantha is the goal scorer in Val D'or though so it might be a reason.

Zlobin had 3 assists last night in a 4-3 3ot win and Val D'or is moving on to the 2nd round

This is like one of those movie ads that quotes a review, "Spectacular and great" and then you notice it's a quote from Joe Nobody of the Hicksville Alabama Supermarket Weekly. And you know if that the best the movie studio could do for a good review, then the movie must really really stink.

Darn. So it seems like Portland is going to play another US-based WHL team, which means I can`t watch. We`ll need your scouting reports, Mr. T!

Wonder why they haven't signed Ruopp yet.. perhaps he's nursing an injury. I feel like he's good enough to play a little in the AHL down the stretch.. unlike Seymour.

Good news is that harrington should be back fairly soon. He was injured on Feb the 26th and his injury was supposed to last 2-6 weeks. Could be back this or next week. Getting him back should help london make a strong push and extended playoffs for him and maata.

What is it about the q tht makes it such a high scoring league? Suck goalies? Defence? Offense only system?

It's definitely not sucky goalies. Not historically, anyway. It's mostly system-oriented. Also, it's style of play. Players that grow up playing in Quebec aren't very big on average. They don't excel at the grind game as a general rule, so a lot of guys don't play that way. So if you're not grinding and killing clock in the corners, you're dangling and heading towards the net. Leads to a lot of chances on goal. And ultimately more offense.

Over the years, I would say the 'Q' has gotten a little closer to the other two CHL leagues. There are better players being drafted into the 'Q' now, better defensemen too. The addition of the Maritimers now bring a different element to the league, so there are bigger players available to the league.

But those are the main reasons, generally speaking.

Kelowan beat Seattle in OT last night so that goes to a game 7. Seattle win and they play Portland, Kelowna win and Portland plays Spokane.

Kelowna won again in OT so Portland faces Spokane (#1 vs. #4 in the West) in the 2nd round, starting Friday.

Also starting Friday will be the OHL 2nd round series London vs. Kitchener: Määttä and Harrington (practising but still day-to-day with a thumb injury) against Marcantuoni and Pittsburgh native John Gibson in goal.

London Free Press said:
The Rangers anticipate seeing Harrington, who missed the first round, in this series. They should. He has been handling the puck well and participating in practice this week. The Knights still call him day-to-day.

“We can bear down still,” Sefton said. “When you’re missing your leader, the guy who runs the ship, things can kind of stray off task. With Harrington back, things will be running a lot tighter in that room. When he talks, everyone listens and does what he says. That’s why he is the captain.
