In a way, this is the first actual OHT36 of the season. The teams have played enough games to sort out a few categories. Many teams will no doubt shift but with history as a guide most teams will maintain their letter and simply add or drop a +/- over time. For some reason St. FX and Queen's always provide headaches.

The positive surprises thus far are Saskatchewan and York. However, I believe that the CW may see a big shake-up from these rankings. Right now Sask, UBC, and Alberta are 2, 3, and 4. But then there is nothing until 12, 14, and 21. That should even out a bit. Pretty much ebery CW game has been a toss-up. Even Regina and Lethbridge have had good games.

One note about interlocking non-conference games. There were none played between the CWUAA and the AUS. In fact, the only CW team to play the OUA was Manitoba against Lakehead. But for what it is worth, the OUA scoreboard looks like this:

OUA v AUS 1-7-1
OUA v NCAA 1-17-0

I had expected the CW to tail off this year. Not much can be drawn from the Manitoba-Lakehead series. But against the NCAA, Alberta, MRU, and Lethbridge all gained splits. Only slow starting Calgary and Manitoba let the conference down.

The AUS did well against the NCAA (5-7-1 with the 1 being a tie, and all games on the road). So the strength of conference looks like AUS-CWUAA-OUA, pretty much as per usual.

THE OHT36: #4

At the end of last season I squeezed a 4th column into the rankings table, for the B- and C+ teams. I have decided to do so again this year. There are many traditionally strong teams that seem far away from A, not really in B, yet way ahead of the mid-C teams. There are now 3 teams in A level and 6 in B level. The 10 B-/C+ teams could jump into B, yet a fall into C would not be a shock. Those teams are all capable of earning a berth in the nationals, while still having some results which make you wonder about them. The 12 teams in C level are looking like a playoff berth would make them happy. The C- teams are in danger of joining RMC in the D level. I thought all 3 would be doing better. Anyhow, here are the scores:

So the upwardly mobile this week include UBC (jumping into A level and a share of first place in the CW), Acadia (just barely missing a jump into the A level themselves), Manitoba (with a road sweep against Calgary), and Guelph (two wins against C level teams can help when you are off to a poor start). The biggest sinks in the rankings go to Carleton, Laurier, amd RMC. The enigmatic UOIT team could be moving up to C+ if next week goes well.

One note: I decided to keep York in the B- category. They could have been moved down to C+ but they were given one more week.

So going up were St. FX (they are infamous for bouncing around the categories, so they may yet slip), Manitoba (7 out of 8 points in two away weekends against University Cup qualifiers from last year), and UOIT (they have just 2 games against C teams and have battled through a tough opening schedule). Those on the down escalator are UBC (they never seemd at home in A level), Saint Mary's (basically traded places with SFX), York (they were clinging on last week, C+ seems appropriate), and St. Thomas (not just 0-8 but the GA is bad).

Lethbridge and UPEI were promoted from C to B-/C+. The B-/C+ category is really tight. The teams could shuffke enromously each week. I lumed them all together since none of the teams are pushing too hard for a bost to B. It is hard to find a #1. UNB's two losses have them looking downward, so Sask gets a boost despite a split. Let's give SFX and Acadia another week at B level to see what happens. I have not boosted McGill due to their weak schedule and their whippings to the AUS in pre-season.

Since the CW has reached the end of the 1st semester, here are their report card comments:

SASKATCHEWAN: The Saskies get credit because you are what your record says you are. They deserve their ranking but I can't help but think that those fast charging Monkeys are bound to pass them. I could see them losing a home playoff series. They could also win the conference.

ALBERTA: After their loss to Manitoba, the Monkeys have rallied with 6 straight wins to rise within 1 point of 1st place and a spot in the A level. It was inevitable, now its official.

MOUNT ROYAL: The Bluegars had a 5-game win streak halted by Saskatchewan in the final game of the semester. This has vaulted them into the B level.

U.B.C.: A win in their final game of the 1st semester ended a 1-5-2 slump that saw them dip from challenging for 1st to clinging on to 4th. Though remaining at B level, a dip to B- or C+ is not hard to imagine.

MANITOBA: The Bisons are currently on a 6 game road unbeaten streak (5-0-1, which includes Alberta). However, they are also on a 4 game home losing streak and are only 2-5-1 overall at the Wayne Fleming Arena. Obviously, the team needs to improve at home in the 2nd semester. If so, they could host a quarter-final.

LETHBRIDGE: While the H0rny Ones are no doubt a pleasant surprise, they could be even better. After a 5 game winning streak (which included sweeps of UBC and Manitoba) left them sitting pretty, those massive home losses to Regina and equally massive losses in Alberta leave everybody asking: “Just who are the real H0rny Ones?”

CALGARY: A split with UBC was enough to keep the Dinos from being relegated to C level, in the 1st semester at least. Their 1st semester record is one of the biggest disappointments in the whole CIS. In the Town of Bedrock a missed playoff appearance would be quite a shock.

REGINA: Unless the Kittens get a few wins for Christmas they wIll enter the 2nd half with no chance whatsoever of a playoff berth. Again. Still, they are not that bad. They will get some wins in the new year and could be the spoilers.

Yes, 5 minutes of each. I don't think they have had a shootout yet.

The OUA started this last year, with similar results - in a year and a half, 54 games have been tied after regulation, but only 10 have required a shootout.

From 2014-15 to present, 19.5% of all OUA games that were tied after regulation required a shootout to determine a winner. Compare this to the last year without the extra 3-on-3 period, 2013-14 - where 45.8% of all games that were tied after regulation required a shootout to determine a winner.

Waterloo makes the jump from C to C+ and UBC falls from B to C+. There is a solid case to boost SMU, UPEI, and Manitoba to B. Either they had to mnove up or UBC had to move down. I chose the minimized disruption, for now. I also split the B- and C+ teams for at least a week since there is a bit of a split there. The C+ teams, IMO, are almost interchangeable in the rankings. Most of the difference in ranking for those teams is attributable to strength of schedule.

BONUS CHART

Since interlocking non-conference play is done but for the RMC v Army game, here is a chart showing how the three CIS confrences have fared against other university/college conferences. A very dismal season for the OUA.

Saint Mary's and Carleton could still move up to B and só they stay at B- for now. Manitoba and UBC slip into the C+ category where they are likely to remain. Laurier remains at C but could well be in C+. The rest of the teams seem pretty stable where they are right now.

I made the change. It comes from Oct 30th where Acadia beat UNB in a shootout rather than in regulation time.

The once vacant AUS B level has been filled from above and below. St. FX moves down and Saint Mary's moves up. St. FX seem to jump around every year, causing me much extra work. Seems they win right after demotions and lose right after promotion.

Alberta is barely cling to A level. I could have easily moved them down. But with a Sask series on the weekend they were given a one week reprieve. They have started a new A- category all to themselves. Ultimately they will have to go back up or fall down.

Windsor is barely clinging on to C+. Like Alberta, they need wins to avoid relegation.

UQTR has picked up a + sign, which leaves them with the B teams for ranking purposes.

Last week Alberta got a reprieve and picked up 2 wins. So they stay for at least one more week, but are still a relegation possibility.

UQTR finally gets a boost to the A level, and Windsor is relegated from C+ to C level. That combo resulted in a lot of shuffling of OUA records. Concordia and Toronto stayed at C level but got a – sign.

I thought it odd that Windsor had no games against A or B level teams so I looked at theor schedule more closely. They had no games against UQTR, McGill, Carleton, or Queen's. Wow.

So that's it. Another season is kaput. It turns out it was OK for me to avoid relegating Alberta. Reclassifying teams at this stage causes a lot of work so I like to wait until I am sure. St. FX gets promoted back to A level, proving that they remain an enigmatic team which loses upon promotion and wins upon relegation. Carleton also gets promoted into the B level.

No other movements affected ranking categories. Toronto and Concordia lose their – signs. New Brunswick's strong close makes them an A+ team, all by themselves.

There are more C+ teams than their should be. But that's OK. The keading teams in the category are simply much closer to the teams behind them than to the teams ahead of them.

Farewell to Non-playoff Teams

Seven teams have bade farewell earlier than they had hoped. Five of the seven also missed out last year. The only changes were in the OUA West, where Laurier and York missed last year and Lakehead and Brock missed this year. Looking ahead, Ottawa returns next year, meaning either they or another OUA East team will miss out a year from now. Here is one last look at those teams and their 2015-16 campaign.

REGINA COUGARS

The Banjocats did not slip too much. But with Lethbridge coming up it made Regina seem even more distant from the playoffs. They have not really contended at all for two years.

QUEEN'S GOLDEN GAELS

Queen's took a step forward everywhere but the standings. They improved, however UOIT improved by more, which meant Queen's moved from 4th to 5th with a better record. They had loads of games aganst C teams and dominated those. They were .500 against the C+ level, and even combined against the A and B levels. Frankly, they could have won the OUA West.

YORK LIONS

Worst to first is a good season. Things were tarnished, however, with a playoff loss to a C level team (Toronto). The OUA West is a whole lot of averageness, só one cannot rule out York as a contender next year. Even if they once again are only #18 nationally.

WATERLOO WARRIORS

Waterloo took a big step back. Last year they were a team on the rise, until they lost to Guelph in the playoffs. This year they were just another basic OUA West team. Things could always be salvaged with a good playoff run. But they lost to a C level team (Ryerson) in the opening round. This followd 5 regular season losses to C teams.

WINDSOR LANCERS

Falling from #8 to #23 is one steep decline. Windsor's win-loss record is deceptive. Since Windsor plays their schedule in pairs, they play only há;f of the OUA East each year. They hit the jackpot. They never played 4 of the top 5 teams in the OUA East, including the top 3 (UQTR, McGill, Carleton). Their .500 record against C+ teams was reasonable enough. But 6 losses to C teams?

NIPISSING LAKERS

The Nippers seem to be stuck. They were at .500 once again. Which gets them to the playoffs against a strong team by OUA standards. With Ottawa returning to the fold, the Nippers, Concordia, and Laurentian will not have a guaranteed playoff berth.

CONCORDIA STINGERS

The Stingers have been the weak sister of the three Quebec teams for a long time now. Back when Concordia was two universities (Sir George Williams and Loyola) they were dominant. But in 1984-85 they fell into a dumpster. Since then they have finished ahead of McGill in 1991, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2004 (6 times in 32 years) and have never finished ahead of UQTR.
