OHT36 #13 – February 2, 2014

The Groundhog Day OHT36 is here!

With a couple of surprising results there has been some shuffling. Alberta finally squeezes into 1st. UNB jumped past Calgary for 2nd, although I was somewhat torn on this. Calgary's loss to Saskatchewan was so bad it should almost count as two.

There are a lot of tight spots but overall the numbers speak for themselves.

For the most part, your rankings consistently pass the smell test for me and provide a more accurate picture than the "official" CIS top 10. I think everyone could quibble with the order here and there, but in your rankings teams almost always seem to end up in the right neighborhood.

Here's the one struggle I have. At some point you need draw a line between A, B, C, and D. I know that this is part art and science - you look a record and strength of schedule, but still you have to draw that line. And if I understand the basics of how your rankings work, the category in which you place a team has a direct impact on the rankings of other teams - i.e. a team ranked as an A will have a greater upward pull on the rankings of teams who defeated that team more than if said team was ranked as a B.

Which brings me to the OUA and specifically UQTR. Because there are no conference cross-overs, it's tough to get a read on how good this team is relative to the top teams in the other two conferences. But they are playing really well. During the first two weeks of the season, they started at 1-3. Since then, they have gone 19-1, including winning their last 13 straight. My question is, why are they not categorized as an A? I understand the competitive differences across the conferences and that UQTR has had a platter of your C's and D's, but you can only beat the teams you play. And they have, in most cases convincingly. With the exception of the first two weeks of the season, they have played as well or better than any other team in the country. If you look at what happened to Calgary over the past two weeks, it's hard to rationalize Calgary being ranked above UQTR at this point in time.

Not a criticism of what you are doing...just seeking to understand.

Most of the CIS commentators on here are more familiar with the east and the west than they are with the OUA. That's just the way it is, but it is a disservice to the OUA's top teams. We just have to wait til the national tournament and then when an OUA team wins it, like McGill did 2 seasons ago, it will be called an upset and the comments will focus on how poorly the competition played against the OUA. If you haven't seen UQTR, McGill or Carleton play you won't know how difficult these teams are to play against.

Teams in the AUS are familiar with UQTR and Carleton, as they have played exhibition games earlier this season. They know that they have good programs and UQTR have added some top notch talent, as has McGill.
It wouldn't be a shock to see another OUA champion!

UQTR is having a very strange season. They went 0-5 in the pre-season (including a loss to RMC) and, along with SMU, were once (shockingly, and deservedly) in the C level.

One thing I try to avoid is giving extra weight to recent games. So while UQTR may have a hot record, so too did Queen's and Ryerson at various times. The logic is that if two teams have the same record and have played the same opponents then they are tied, regardless of the order in which they played their games.

But look at what Moncton and Sask have done lately. Moncton is 9-3 in the new year, including 5-1 in their last 6 games against A and B teams. Just last week they won 3 games, all against B teams. Sask just swept previously unbeaten Calgary, incuding a 10-2 victory!

Based on the season as a whole, UQTR is in the upper B+. A case could be made that more teams should be in A. Normally, there are. But this year the teams now in B+ have records much more in common with the B teams than the A teams. UQTR is right now on the middle of Moncton, Sask, McGill, and Carleton. (In those rankings the one I struggled with the most was in regard to Moncton/Sask.)

A couple of weeks ago I compiled the category-vs-category winning percentages. They were:
- A v B: 48-3-3 .917
- B v A: 6-44-4 .149
- A v C: 15-1-0 .938
- C v A: 1-14-1 .094
- B v C: 115-15-6 .868
- C v B: 21-101-14 .206
Those numbers would be dramatically altered if any teams were shifted about. The most likely team to change would be Waterloo, going from C to B.

I explained before that the first step I take in ranking B level teams is looking at their W-L +/- against the B level, then allocating bonuses for points against A teams and penalize for points lost to C teams. Once I get a preliminary ranking I smooth it out by considering what the teams would have to do to have even records. The team with the tougher task gets the lower ranking.

By doing that with the B+ teams, Sask is a +9, Moncton a +7, UQTR a +5, McGill, Carleton, UPEI, and Manitoba are +4s, Western Ontario, MRU, and Regina are +2s, and SFX is a +1. The B teams are all even or a minus. The "smoothing" resulted in two shifts: Moncton over Sask and Western Ontario over Manitoba.

BTW, here are UQTR's results against B+ teams:
x Fri Sep 20 UPEI 4 UQTR 3
x Sat Sep 21 Moncton 3 UQTR 2
x Sat Sep 28 UQTR 1 McGill 5
Sat Oct 12 UQTR 3 W. Ontario 5
Sat Oct 19 UQTR 0 McGill 3
Wed Oct 30 Carleton 1 UQTR 2
Tue Jan 07 McGill 4 UQTR 6

Thanks for taking the time to put together such a detailed response - and everything you've outlined makes good sense.

I think with these lists some of it comes down to philosophy. Yours happens to be you want to focus on the entire body of work versus what's happened lately and it's your ranking and that's your prerogative. And I gernerally agree with this philosophy - most of the time.

Where I'd disagree is that I wouldn't say what UQTR has done constitutes a "hot record in recent games" and what they've done is well beyond what we saw with Ryerson or Queen's (or Lakehead for that matter) earlier, or Moncton currently. 19 out of 20 games represents 70% of their schedule, with 4 games to go. So while I completely get how you arrive at the ranking, to me it seems that there are certain times where you just need to stand back and say "the math doesn't work in the situation" - they are having a brilliant season but are getting penalized because they were asleep for the first two weeks of it. Had these losses been spread out or all happened recently, then I see the case for them being a B. But having a slightly softer record than Moncton or Sask against B teams is the direct result of UQTR’s losses to Guelph, Western, and McGill back in early October

One last comment I'd make. I think you've mentioned before that you don't include pre-season games in your formula after a certain point in the season. To me, pre-season and exhibition games should never be used as criteria for ranking a team. True, it’s the only way you can see how teams perform in interconference play, but so often the objective of these games is not about winning - it's about testing out fringe players, trying new lines, working on new plays. It is about winning for some teams sometimes, but the point is you never know.

Anyway, totally respect that are trying to bring an objective ranking together, and it's way more credible than what out of the CIS voters. But I still think UQTR is an A!

UQTR began the season with a new coaching staff and were learning a new system. Maybe the learning curve was 5 games at the beginning of the season but they now seem to have nailed it.

Plus, they had injuries to major weapons (Morin and Tremblay) at the start of the year.

Adding their 4 recruits at X-Mas time, especially Asselin and Lefebvre, has drastically changed that team. They've had a weird season, but since they lost one time in their last 19, I believe they stand in the elite category. Even when they play bad, they find ways to win.

When they came back from Christimas, they played McGill and won, but I think the Redmen were the better team in that game. However, that was their first game with their new recruits. Since then, the new guys have phased into the system and they've become a well oiled machine.

Are they an A team or a B+ team ? As one said, it's all about philosophy, but in the end, they're a dangerous bunch and tonight's matchup against Carleton should give us a very good idea of who's the hottest team in the OUA right now.

A teams don't lose both games in a weekend (especially to a team that lost to RMC earlier in the week) with the exception of Calgary which are borderline on a freefall right now. Let the UQTR slide begin.

It would be interesting to see how consistent AUS teams would be if they were required to spend 7 hours on the bus to get to most away games.

OHT36 #14 – February 9, 2014

THE PENULTIMATE OHT36

The big change in this ranking was that Waterloo was changed to B from C. This had a ripple effect throughout the OUA, especially for the OUA West teams who played Waterloo twice. Waterloo started the season as a B level team and has basically rebounded to where people thought they would be.

There were also minor ranking shuffles, with St. F-X losing their +, and the C- category was wiped out with Laurentian getting a D and UOIT and Nipissing losing their -.

The many fans of UQTR see how one week can change things. It sort of shows how things have gone this year. Various teams have risen up the B level rankings, only to stumble. In the end, there is not much to separate the B teams. How shocked would you be to see Waterloo beat Saskatchewan?

OHT36 #15 – February 16, 2014

THE END OF SEASON OHT36

The season is over already. It always seems that we go so fast from the post-Christmas mid-season mode to playoffs. Many of us will have gone to the local rink for the last time, and each week more of us shall be added to that list. Too bad university exams are in April. If they were only in May we'd get more hockey!

There are a few minor changes. Alberta and UNB have been given an A+. Lethbridge is bumped from D to C-. And the B- category was refined. If the season lasted longer Sask and W. Ontario could move from B+ to A- and the B- teams could be C+. But since so many B teams have gone on rolls (up hill or down hill) only to return to a state of equilibrium, I am not moving anybody out of the B level.

As we look to the playoffs I expect that there will be little consensus on picking winners in many opening round series.

Anyhow, these are the scores from the final week:

Farewell, non-playoff teams.

So long ...

Mid-February seems like an early time to be ending a hockey season. But that's the way it is for 8 CIS teams, two from each division/conference. For some teams it might be a case of relief. A long, sad season coming to a merciful end just in time to allow time to concentrate on exams. Others will watch in envy as other pereceived lesser teams are going to the playoffs. Others will be in the middle, perhaps somewhat satisfied with the progress made.

Here is the table for the teams eliminated:

The Banjo-Cats were in serious contention for 3rd place early in the season. This followed a pleasant surprise season in 2012-13 when they comfortably made the playoffs in a season where they started ranked in a dog-fight with Lethbridge and the new Mount Royal team. They gradually sank down the standings but never hit 7th place until the final night of the season. Though tied with UBC on points, they lost out based on head-to-head records. Their only positive weekend of the second half was a road sweep of the Bisons. I suspect that their off-season shopping list would be one large body for each position. They were definitely under-sized to compete in the CW.

Waterloo started slow and gradually closed the gap. But in the end they lost a playoff berth based on a tie-breaker. Last year the Warriors surprised one and all by winning the OUA West and going to nationals. I suspect their hockey karma account was overdrawn after that run and so perhaps a backslide was to be expected. Though the OUAW lacks really weak teams, they also lack a true powerhouse. One would think that a good team would be able to win enough games to at least be in the playoffs ahead of the many so-so teams who did make the playoffs.

The STU Pids looked head for disaster. Their coach left suddenly during the off-season and it appeared they were scrambling just to stay afloat. And with the AUS being very unforgiving this could have been a season to forget. To their credit, the Tommies actually improved. They swept Dal-lousy and even knocked off the Squirrels. But in the new year they never beat a team not named Tiggers. They appear to be a fair distance away from being a B level team, which they would have to be in order to qualify for AUS playoffs, but I think they would count this season as a step forward.

This appears to a program on the down escalator. They often played short-staffed. They were far from being relegated to a D level ranking, but they seem ensconced in the C level for now.

The H0rny Ones may have been the worst CW team I have witnessed. Even so, they are a hard-working team and so it was good to see them show some life at the end, sweeping playoff-bound MRU on the final weekend. That sweep moved them out of D level and intio C level. But if they want to be a playoff team they need to be a B level team.

What a disappointment for Dal-lousy. They seemed to be on their way back and in fact looked good in pre-season. And what happened to that CIS “investigation†that was supposed to wrap up by the end last season? Is that still hanging over their heads?

First year programs always have low expectations. Especially for a team which did not even start in a lower league. But the Voyageurs started out OK, and perhaps capable of a playoff berth against the lowly bottom half of the OUA East. They lost their last 11 games and seemed to fade away as the season progressed.

The record looks bad and they were definitely #36 in the rankings. But 5 wins is a sign of progress. I would think that their rivalry games against Queen's and West Point are the season highlight. They beat Queen's but I think Canadians would like to see them beat the US Army again.

At the Rink
Holly, still no word on the investigation. Over a year in the making and not a peep from the CIS.
Dal has made the playoffs once in the past 10 years; STU has been in 3 times in the last decade. This year Dal will lose most of their "core" players to graduation. I can't see them becoming contenders for another 10 years.
