AF's Thoughts:

Roster Notes: I expect one of Sven Baertschi or Johnny Gaudreau to be in the NHL with the Flames. There is also a pretty good chance Tyler Wotherspoon is with the big club to start the season.

Team: This is easily the most inexperienced team in the North Division. They have an extremely young team, the coaching staff has turned over completely and pretty much their entire leadership group from Abbotsford have signed elsewhere. They are young, but they are also talented and looking to feed off hockey mad fans in Adirondack.

Offensively: Using my special and likely inaccurate formula of averaged 2013-14 statistics from my projected rosters I project the ADK Flames to be the highest scoring team in the division by a very significant margin and one of the top scoring teams in the league. Max Reinhart, Markus Granlund and one of Sven Baertschi or Johnny Gaudreau

Defensively: This is much harder to project, with a new coach and a new more high risk offensive system in place. A team that was middle of the pack in goals against last season and has lost pretty much their entire top 4 on the blueline only to be replaced with youngsters are likely to be victimized. Should he play in the AHL Tyler Wotherspoon will lead the way on the backend, leaning on veterans Mark Cundari who has returned from being loaned to the Wolves last season and Sena Acolatse who has signed with the Flames after a few years in the Sharks organization.

Goaltending: Looking at their numbers from last season a duo of Ortio and Thiessen look very formidable, but alas that is only on paper. With possible defensive struggles I expect their numbers to suffer as a result.

Prediction: 2nd in North Division

AF's Thoughts:

Roster Notes: It is rumored that Magnus Nygren will return to Europe if he is not playing in the NHL. Greg Pateryn will be in the thick of a job on the Habs blueline as well. Tokarski is waiver eligible so if the Habs are worried about losing him on waivers we could see Budaj waived and demoted instead.

Team: They are the second most inexperienced team in the division but have a small collection of returning veterans. Newcomers Joey MacDonald, TJ Hensick, Dalton Thrower and Tim Bozon highlight the newcomers to the team.

Offensively: I project the Bulldogs forwards to be among the lowest scoring in the division, but if Pateryn returns to the Bulldogs and Thrower produces as a rookie they will likely generate more offense from the blueline than any other team in the division by a fair margin. Overall I expect Hamilton to finish 4th in goals, but quite a bit ahead of the lowest scoring team. Hensick and Andrighetto should lead the way in scoring.

Defensively: Very hard to project with the possible losses of Nygren and Pateryn, but with those 2 players they were quite poor last season. If they lose one or both of those defenders their bad defensive play could become a nightmare.

Goaltending: This appears to be the strength of the team with Tokarski as the projected starter and Joey MacDonald as his backup. However even this strength won't be enough to save this team from having very high goals against totals.

Prediction: 4th in North Division

AF's Thoughts:

Roster Notes: On the blue line Jake McCabe, Mark Pysyk and Chad Ruhwedel have a shot at making the Sabres this coming season. Upfront all of Luke Adam, Zac Dalpe and Matt Ellis have a more than legitimate chance of making the big club. Should he be sent to the minors McCabe and Grigorenko will be the bigger name first year AHLers to join the Americans.

Team: Last season the Americans were very average both offensive and defensively. I expect them to improve in both regards this season.

Offensively: I project the Amerks to be middle of the pack in goals for sandwiched tightly between the Marlies and Bulldogs. Offensively they are likely to be led by Luke Adam and Johan Larsson but Mikhail Grigorenko could make it interesting. If he is sent to Rochester Ruhwedel will provide solid offensive numbers from the bueline.

Defensively: With the addition of McCabe the one thing you can say about the defensive group is they are big with Ruhwedel likely to be the only defenseman under 6'0 and most being 6'2 or 6'3.

Goaltending: This could be interesting. Matt Hackett is injured and not expected to return until Dec/Jan and statistically speaking he was the worst of the bunch by a significant margin in the AHL last season, but he is also the most NHL ready. Lieuwen and Makarov have the potential to make thing very interesting if they continue to play like they did last season.

Prediction: 3rd in North Division

AF's Thoughts:

Roster Notes: The forward group will see both Bodie McLaren will fight hard to make the Leafs out of camp. They have also suffered two major losses with TJ Brennan and Drew McIntyre parting ways with the Leafs organization.

Team: The Marlies reached the Western Conference Final again in 2013-14 and should be the class of the North Division in 2014-15. They could also be a very tough and hard to play against team that will punish their opponents with both their bodies and their fists.

Offensively: I project the Marlies to be pretty average offensively again offensively this season, but will take a step back with the loss of leading scorer TJ Brennan who signed with the Islanders organization. Despite the loss of Brennan I do still think they will finish 2nd in the North Division in goals finishing just ahead of Rochester and Hamilton.

Defensively: Defense will be the strength of the Marlies again this season and should be a top 5 team defensively with 5 full-time defenders returning. While the loss of Brennan hurts them offensively, I think it will help them defensively and make an already strong defensive team stronger by replacing his minutes with rookie Matt Finn who is a much more defensively sound player.

Goaltending: The Marlies goaltending will be inexperienced with the loss of McIntyre but Sparks should be able to handle the load as the starter as he performed well while McIntyre was with the Leafs.

Prediction: 1st in North Division

AF's Thoughts:

Roster Notes: There are a number of players that could be in Vancouver or could be in new homes come opening night. Markstrom will need to clear waivers to reach Utica and I am not sure that will happen, he could also be traded if a team is willing to pay the price to acquire him. Corrado could be Vancouver bound after a strong year and Sanguinetti is returning from the KHL and will do everything in his power to be a full-time NHL upon his return., howeverI expect one of these player to be with the Comets. In the forward group Nicklas Jensen and Dustin Jeffrey will fight to be full-time NHLers.

Team: The Comets are a mix of bad offense, average defense and good goaltending, maybe even great goaltending if Markstrom is able to join the team.

Offensively: A year ago the Comets were a very poor offensive team finished with the 3rd lowest goal totals in the league. I really don't expect that to change as I really don't see where there is any improvement offensively without relying too heavily on rookie Brendan Gaunce, in fact I think their offense will dry up even further as they will have less veterans putting up points.

Defensively: An average defensive team last year and should be the same again this year. Luckily for them playing in a very low scoring division with the likely to be less than stellar defenses of the Flames and Bulldogs in their division their back end may look above average defensively many nights.

Goaltending: This is by far their strength. Eriksson may be the best goaltender in the division and with the possible addition of Markstrom they could have the best two goaltenders in a division that also boasts Ortio and Tokarski. They also have Cannata who himself is no slouch and IMO could be the best backup goaltender in the division. Unfortunately for the Comets their great goaltending won't score them any goals.

Prediction: 5th in North Division

Brookbank with a nasty elbow to the head of Valcourt

Garnett Hathaway jumped to his teammates defense only to get beaten and bloodied by Brookbank. Courageous play by Hathaway, but ill advised as Brookbank is one tough customer.

edit: how the **** did Brookbank not get 5 and a game for that?

That whole line stood out most the night. Knight's goals were snipes, one was a deflection and another he banged in from the slot. Good hard goals from the toughest places to play.

The more I look at the AHL standings and some of the remaining schedules I realize how much of a sham the AHL schedule is.

First you get the top seed in the division getting a top 3 seed, but the schedule isn't even set up to division heavy for everyone. For example the Heat played Utica 8 times but only play Charlotte 4 times, despite the fact that Charlotte is in the same division as the Heat (don't ask me how) and Utica is in a different division.

Another example is the Heat don't play a single game against the Eastern Conference, but Rochester plays 20 games against the Eastern Conference!

I can only imagine what other anomalies I would find if I actually dug deeper.
