Odds the Leafs actually keep this year’s first round pick?

Will the Leafs actually have a 1st round pick this year heading into the draft?

What a situation the Leafs are in right now. They have a top 10 blue chip 22 year-old forward they can trade while being 5-1. They also have all their picks and some pretty good prospects to move at the deadline for additional help.
They are in a great situation.

Because of the Stanley Cup. They were ina far different situation when they players were picked.
The first round picks and development will keep us in the Stanley cup conversation not the guys like Boyle and Plekanec.

WE need to make a big move at the deadline for a cup run. I fuilly endorse trading a first rounder for it. It's 52 years and counting. Time to end it.
If any organization can afford to trade a 1st rounder it's the Leafs right now.
Notice Pittsburgh has barely picked in the 1st round with Crosby/Malkin? Because they need to maximize their window to win cups with those 2.

Take a look back at all the major trades in the past trade deadlines. More often then not, they turn out terrible.

I'd rather make a subtle move than a big one and over pay.

Big deadline deals rarely equal winning a cup.

Trading a 1st rounder doesn't mean you are getting a superstar back. Almost every cup winner makes a move.
We have to move past the rev=building/picks stage at some point. 52 years! We can't not do everything we can right now to end it.
WE signed TAvares to win now, not hoping for a good player when he's 33.

What did these teams do:

2006 canes
2007 ducks
2008 wings
2009 pens
2010 hawks
2011 bruins
2012 kings
2013 hawks
2014 kings
2015 hawks
2016 pens
2017 pens
2018 caps

Rarely did those teams trade first rounders. Those teams made their moves in the offseasons prior to them winning.

Keep it, don't change the "Draft and develop" plan just because we are good now. I know we need better defense but i'd rather lose this year and continue to develop a great prospect pool and sign a UFA if we have the space. We have some great young d prospects that should be ready in the next few years, anyways.

Unless it's an absolute STUD of a d-man. And i mean top 15-20 D in the league, which wouldn't happen.

Granted, many traded their 1st rounders in the offseason, but they did make a lot of moves overall at the deadline.

A lot of the moves were depth moves,I’d be okay with depth moves.
LA is a team that looked like the rebuild wasn't working and started trading a lot of futures before they won. Anaheim added Pronger for high picks, Pittsburgh trades their 1st virtually every year.

I’m talking about the deadlines for those teams.

Last thing I want is to slip back into the Dark ages. Draft well, screw trading picks unless a sure thing pops up on the trade market.

From 1996-2008 the Red Wings traded 7 first round picks in total.

1996 Detroit traded Paul Coffey, Keith Primeau and a 1997 1st round pick for Brendan Shanahan and Brian Glynn.
1999 Detroit traded Anders Eriksson, 1999 and 2001 1st round picks for Chris Chelios.
2001 Detroit traded Vyacheslav Kozlov and a 2002 1st round pick for Dominik Hasek.
2003 Detroit traded Sean Avery, Maxim Kuznetsov, 2003 1st round pick and 2004 2nd round pick for Mathieu Schneider.
2004 Detroit traded Tomas Fleischmann, 2004 1st round pick and 2006 4th round pick for Robert Lang.
2006 Detroit traded 2006 1st round pick and 5th round pick for two 2nd round picks. (Just a draft trade)

Was actually surprised how often they did end up trading their first round picks but they did end up with huge core pieces for their 4 cups in that time frame. Winning in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008.

I'm not sure if we're ready to give up 1st rounders yet but I can definitely see it happening to try and push us over the top when the time comes.

Granted this was partially during a different time where first round picks were not quite as valuable imo.

Pitt didn't win anything after Crosby and Malkin sign those big contracts. You either win when your top players are in their ELC deals or when they are in their prime years after.

So basically this year is Leafs best chance to win in years.

Do you even watch hockey?
Sid and Malkin signed their deals before the almost 3peat.

Our true window open's up after the young D comes up IE Lilly, Sandman.

IMHO this is the year that we work on chemistry, teamwork and systems. Next year we add Defensive help and sign the rest of the core.

Then we make a push. Maybe scare a couple of teams this year and next but nothing like when the team is finally together as management and fans have envisioned.

Shanniplan doesn't include trading first round picks.

I hope you're right. Lou sure wasted 2nd round picks like they were going out of style.

The plan is to keep the prospect pool fully stocked as some players (outside the core) get too expensive to keep.

I like Tampa's execution. They've done a great job of balancing present and future.
Until they have to sign their players. There will be a purge coming there.....soon.
