Myers did play there a bunch last year due to the lack of corner OF spots. I was hoping he'd find his way back to LF, but it looks like Myers enjoyed playing the infield.

If Pomeranz can find a good pitching coach this could be a win for the padres.

Was it Alonso they kept over Rizzo?

Curt Young is very good. Pomeranz can't throw strikes.
Yeah total mind fart it was the A`s. Pitchers go there, become great, get traded then become big bags of suck. Pomeranz has all the potential in the world.

Combo of two trades when Josh Byrnes took over as GM:

12/17/2011 - Latos for Alonso, Grandal, Volquez
1/6/2012 - Rizzo for Cashner

Padres previous GM was Jed Hoyer who went to Chicago with Theo Epstein, and they had originally drafted Rizzo in Boston. So they jumped at the chance to get him to Chicago.

Unfortunately there was a thought with the Padres that Alonso might be better suited for Petco Park than Rizzo (ie, less power but more of a doubles/line drive hitter).

Read Alonso and Danny Valencia played together in high school and college. Now big league teammates. That's pretty cool.

That's pretty bad trade for Padres. Alonso is good, he's exactly A's type player. Rzep is upgrade over Abad.

Well, A's just trade for solid 1B guy who gets on base at a solid rate and bring a lot of doubles. He'll be fine. He's useful. And they get him for average swingman. That's something.
