We call Germs Němci and that means almost literally “mutes”.

@Porvari

It got better since the 90s. Jágr is no longer pronounced Jäger at least.

Often the most butchered combination was “-ec” at the end of a name in Plekanec or Pavelec. Because announcers pronounced it as “-ack” in “back” instead of “ets” with the “ts” being pronounced the same way as in Datsyuk.

Usually the biggest problem is intonation, because we put emphasis on different syllables.

And “e” in Hertl’s name isn’t silent and Rittich’s name has the same pronunciation as it would in German. It’s not Rittick.

I know, and that's a completely different can of worms because in the Russian chronicles from the early 2nd millennium everyone from west are Nemtsi. Danes, Swedes, them all.

My lot (and the Finnics in general) call Russians by a name led from the Wends because we just kept calling the Swedes with the Rus-related word, not being ones to let go of an idea.

And the beloved Russian slur for the Finnics, чухна, Chukhna, come from Chuds, a specific Finnic tribe, who assumably got their name from *thiudos, the Germanic/Gothic word some Germanic bunch used of themselves when they infiltrated to mess up stuff around the 7th century or so.

"Southwest Finns" (the aforementioned Suomi), Tavastlanders Häme and the Sami all derive their endonym from either Proto-Balto-Slavic *źemē (“ground”) or from *ćoma, originally a word meaning "human", ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm (possibly through *ǵʰmṓ), because we didn't think it through and invent one back at the Uralic urheimat before Seima-Turbano phenomena unrooted us and imprinted us with our eternal fancy for Bronze still showing in certain fringe sports.

But for the foreigners, Häme became Tavastians probably because they were considered Tav Aester, "stupid Estonians" to separate them from the regular reasonable Estonians residing on the south side of the Bay of Finland. Maybe we should be happy with getting away with becoming Finnr.

How did it Finnr become the exonym again? I know you told me already, but I forgot.

A bit like the Russians with Nemci, the Norse applied it to pretty much anyone eachwards of them. The pre-Norwegians calles the Sami Finnr, but then the pre-Swedes got it stick on the southern Finlanders.

It may be that Finnmark in Northern Norway relates to the original Finland in modern South-West Finland, "mark" being a name for hunting land and "land" being a specific name for agricultural land. One had hunting "Finns", the other had farming "Finns".

... or maybe some aggravated Rosspig viking guy asked who the f*** is the soon-dead sumbitch who stole my oars, and the suspects nearby would claim that we wouldn't know, we're Finns the lot of us. I don't know.

So I don't have nhl network but I do check nhl.com or the nhl app pretty regularly to see what the talking heads are saying about the canes and whatever else. After all of them being so wrong about how the canes and rangers series was going to go I've been looking forward to seeing what they say about the beat down that wasn't supposed to be, but its been radio silence since game 1. Is anyone who does have nhl network or is watching any nbc commentary experiencing this? Like they really don't want to admit they were wrong or talk about the canes at all? Or am I imagining it?

During the Islanders/Panthers game today Keith Jones and whoever else was calling the game went out of their way to praise how well the Canes played against the Rongos.

Don't know about people that picked against us, but I've seen Patrick Sharp and Cory Schneider be complimentary about us a few times. I don't get NHL Network either. No matter what the team though, or sport for that matter, most pundits don't have to own up to what they are wrong about.

If memory serves me right, on the pre season show Jones predicted NY in 4 due to the goaltending differential and the lack of Hamilton and Pesce to deter the Rags 2 stellar offensive dynamos. Screw him.

Honestly even Im pretty surprised how well our defense played.

They really struggled to put it all together in January/February. Seemed like every game, we would good for at least a couple god awful turnovers in the defensive zone.

Yeah this is a pretty underrated thing that happened. Hamilton and Pesce out is a huge deal, that's close to the Jets losing Scheifele and Laine in terms of devastating loss of talent. Yet what we saw on the ice was a team that didn't appear to be missing anybody.

Granted, it was against a team that has depth challenges and allowed us to key in on one or two important guys. We won't be able to replicate that against a top-4 team. But still, that sweep doesn't happen without a really outstanding performance from the D group and some serious defensive commitment and energy from the forwards. I'm blown away that we didn't even seem to have a hiccup with this issue.

I didn't see anything different this series with their play. There were still the guys left wide open in front (Howden and others) or breaking in (Kreider, Breadman, etc.). It was Mr Azek and Optimus Riemer that was the difference.

In January and February they spent a lot of time figuring out how to play without Dougie and Pesce and goalies and with Skjei and Trocheck and never Vatanen and then again without Haula and Wallmark. I'm sure the pause helped them sort a lot of that out. Hopefully Dougie can come back into the lineup at a high level.

And hey, now we're essentially 12-0-1 at the start of seasons under Rod counting this return to play. Rod knows how to get the boys ready early.
