I think 2-4 LW is wide open, much like the entire bottom 4 of the defense.

Dzingel, Nino, and Foegele will battle for the 3 LW slots.

Marty, McGinn, Bishop, and Geekie battle for the other 4th line spots.

and who is starting in net?

we got battles all over the place when this starts. Hopefully its more of a raise the level of play thing instead of when you have 2 QBs you have 0 starting QBs thing. Im not 100% sold on Williams being a lock for 3rd RW. This long break will be harder on the 35+ year old veterans.

Not so sure about that. The break could benefit Williams more than younger players. At this point Willy has played 20 games—enough to show he still belongs, yet not enough to have him suffer serious wear. Some older athletes seem to excel after a layoff (Federer in the 2017 Australian Open being a prime example).

Not saying it will be a huge advantage, but not sure it is a bad thing.

The older veterans will be fresher later in the playoffs than normal. At the same time, it takes the older folks a little bit longer to knock off the rust and grease the wheels.

It depends on how he handled the time off, and how the Canes handle their "back to practice" phase.

If he can get a couple of weeks of good warmup, find his legs, generally get back to where he was in early March, then the pause was definitely a good thing. There was nothing to gain for him from grinding through another month of hockey, other than to help his team get into the bracket. You bring in Justin Williams for a playoff run, and here we are.

I agree there are going to be injuries galore. I hope none are too serious but going from nothing for months to elimination games is asking for it, begging for it.

There is hopefully going to be at least a month of phase 2 training with on ice allowed, 3 weeks of training camp, and possibly a couple of exhibition games. Sure, there may be more injuries, but I'd think that's enough to get back in some semblance of hockey shape. And the injuries may be canceled out a bit by guys being more rested than they've ever been going into a playoff scenario. Not to mention guys like Hamilton that weren't rushed back for the playoffs as they may have been in normal circumstances.

The players signed off on it and the vast majority of them clearly want to play. We'll see which teams are the most well-conditioned to pull it off. Based on how our season went in terms of injuries, outside of that freak leg break that Dougie experienced, we seem to be one of the better-prepared ones in terms of physical shape. We'll see how it goes.

Williams is an X factor, imo. While he still found a way to get on the score sheet, he skated like 38 year old that signed half way through the season. With everyone out of game rhythm, perhaps he could benefit. The forward group looks so much more imposing if he can be a 2nd option on a line with Aho, allowing Svechnikov and Teravainen to create matchup problems on another scoring line. The strong correlation between how the team took off in January 2019 and Brind'Amour separating the Finns still resonates with me.

Niederreiter - Aho - Williams
Svechnikov - Staal - Teravainen
Foegele - Trocheck - Necas
McGinn - Geekie/Martinook - Martinook/Dzingel

We shouldn’t let anyone counted on for offense to be with Staal, who’s much more effective as a number 3. Even if Trocheck hasn’t found his way he plays a more offensive game. Seeing Staal with two offensive players in your lineup gave me a sad.
