USA
From her twitter, she started medical school in July 2017. So she won't graduate until 2021. Match Day is in May so they won't know where she will be doing residency until May 2021. The timing isn't too great for them since Trouba only has 1 more year of RFA (July 2019 to July 2020) so the only way to guarantee they would be in the same location would be for him to sign another a 2 year deal and await her residency placement. I imagine their plan was to go for a big city (i.e. NYC) to increase their chances of being together (more hospitals = more chances to match there) but as I said, NYC is notoriously difficult to get into in general, let alone as a DO.

Obviously Canada didn't work as she would need to do a US based residency to practice in the US.. so not wanting to commit long-term to Winnipeg was really the first component of all of this. Maybe he chooses to commit long-term to NYR and hopes his fiance can eventually join him rather than pass up millions to wait for the security of being together.

and that's all the internet stalking I will allow myself to do cause that's already borderline creepy lol

If it came down to it, you dont think the Rangers would have any pull or have any inside connections to get her placed in NYC?

Absolutely zero.

There are an incredible amount of restrictions in place that prohibit this on both legal and technical measures.

It really depends on what she wants to do and where she wants to do it. If she wants to do a non-competitive residency (i.e. family medicine) in a not so competitive hospital, then NYC itself is a pretty good option depending on her scores and application.

The big benefit of the NY area are that there are a ton of options if you're willing to forego competitive specialties and/or competitive hospitals. If they're willing to be in the metro area, there are tons more options there too. If she wants to do something competitive, that's always challenging to guarantee where you would end up and I can speak from personal experience that you really never know what will happen in the Match.

I imagine they don't have a concrete plan but what was obvious was that Winnipeg was a no-go as she will need to do a US residency. NY can be either a blessing or a humongous curse depending on her career goals. In general, her chances for matching will be highest at her home institution and/or home state though. I can't speak to specifics since I obviously don't know what she wants to do or how she ranks/scores. Heck, she's probably studying for the first part of the boards as we speak lol.

They could buy a VERY nice home in Westchester and at minimum she could wet her beak at Westchester Hospital.

Westchester is a fringe large hospital. They have some top notch specialist, but a high turnover rate in the lower ranks. Also a very busy trauma ER that get fly ins from all over on top of local patients.

It's a valid option till a glam NYC job opens up.

I still can't believe how the New York Rangers just stole Jacob Trouba from the Jets for a mid-late 1st round pick and an average bottom pairing defenseman.
You can probably believe it now, seeing as NJD stole Subban out of Nashville.

Things get done, regardless of these restrictions. That is the way the world works. Let's not be naive.

Yep, just gotta call up a residency program director and ask them to risk their job, their medical license and their program's ACGME license (i.e. ability to participate in the match and employ residents). Easy peasy.

Every year, programs get placed on probation and penalized for even talking to medical students outside the match process. It's not as easy as you think, trust me. It's also not that easy to hide.

She'll likely just apply very broadly in NY or wherever Trouba ends up when she's ready to match, possibly with a backup specialty that's not competitive. Things aren't going to fair well if she matches over her head, anyways.

You're missing the residency part. She gets to rank her programs. Programs get to rank her.. and a computer matches them together. Applicants can list every single program in the United States and not get a residency spot (and it happens, especially in competitive specialties and very weak applicants). You don't get to pick where you want to go with any amount of confidence.

She'll be perfectly fine post-residency as there are no shortage of jobs pretty much anywhere and it's not like money is an issue, so the other option is just to suck it up.. spend 3-7 years elsewhere and then move in together wherever.

Like any medical student, she's going to work her ass off to get to where she wants to get and they'll figure this other shit out afterwards. She has a long trek ahead of her before Match Day.
