Why do people think the sign and trade is a thing in the NHL? It exists in the NBA because you can sign your own player to more than a new team can in free agency. That's it. It's a selfish act by the player to get even more money for leaving. There is no provision like this in the NHL. It makes zero sense for a player to agree to this so the team he is committing to long term has to give up more assets to get him.
