Not necessarily.
The Rangers likely don't see Hayes(27) as an option for them in the future with Zib, Chytl, Andersson and Howden +. And they could lose him to expansion if they keep him.
They are a rebuilding team and can move him for another 1st + assets.

Every playoff team will be in on him at the deadline.
But now you risk him getting hurt and him walking for nothing. Or him having a bad season and not returning that much

If he is not in the teams long term plans that is the risk they take.
What is the alternative?...........he apparently is not in their long term plans.

Will never happen, but would love to see him in CAR for Faulk...

nope, not for Faulk

min.: unprotected Car 2019 1st + McKeown + unsigned Fox's rights as a throw in [remember, he's going educational route, not directly to pros, and is a risk to be lost for nothing].
More if competitive bids drive up cost.

Don't sign him and trade him to a team that thinks they can work out a multi year deal?

Seems quite simple

Assuming Seguin stays in dallas next summer, he's only behind Duchene and Pavelski as the best centres on the market.

Good luck with all that...horrible

I wouldn’t trade Fox or CAR’s 1st alone for UFA to be Hayes, let alone combine them and add McKeown to boot.

Just watch Bergevin trading Pacioretty for Hayes in a 1 for 1 trade, thinking he can re sign Hayes next summer.
Not happening. Rangers aren't moving Hayes for a 29 year old pending UFA. They are rebuilding team. They're going to want future assets.

That's pretty obvious **** right there.

You sign him now like they did, you have the whole season to move him, not simply a few weeks before camp starts.
Your alternative makes them race against a deadline to move him before camp starts and decreases any leverage to get a good return. That's the nuts and bolts of it.

$5 mil for a year? must have gotten monetary advice from Chiarelli !! :sarcasm:
He's a 26 year old, Two-Way Center with great Size that put up 25G last year with practically no PP time.

Yea, 5M is pretty much the going price for a player of his caliber.

They should've known months ago if he's apart of their core or not. Trade him at draft and move on. Now you are risking the guy getting hurt and getting nothing for him. Makes zero sense to sign RFA's with one year left before being a UFA to a one year deal. Unless they aren't that good

Seems a bit much especially since he has no term. As others have mentioned he will be moved I am sure unless the team gels really well and are in the playoff hunt.

They might not have realized during the draft what kind of contract demands Hayes was looking for. Or maybe they did have a trade in place and it fell through. There's a possibility they still do want Hayes long term, but are reluctant to give him that kind of contract until they see how he comes into camp this year and how well he plays.

There are possible variables that we just don't know.

Why do you assume they didn't assess that months ago? Maybe that is why they didn't offer him a longer contract and scheduled arbitration? Maybe they couldn't get the deal they wanted at the draft. You do know the Rangers made a hell of a deal trading UFA Nash to Boston and even UFA Grabner to NJ.

They didn't seem to worry about Nash getting hurt and he has a history of that...why worry about a 27yr old who has been pretty healthy his whole career? They'll figure it out.

Because you are adding risk for no reason at all.

This is ideal for him to just hangout on the Rangers, who will be terrible this season, and then get traded to a contender.

It’s a win for everyone

I'm not buying that. Any player has some risk to get hurt, you are basing your argument on something that might not even be a factor or is a factor when considering every contract in the game. It worked with Nash, it will work for Hayes whose value will be at a peak at the deadline.

Do you believe his value right now will be as high as it will be at the deadline? That is likely the reason they signed him for 1 year.

or

maybe Hayes wants to test free agency and requested only a 1yr deal. If he wants more than 5.5m per for 5yrs.......they are going to move him.

5 million on a 1 year deal is not a lot of money for a guy that played a defensive role last year because of our dumb coach, scored 25 goals and was over 50% on faceoffs. More anti NY hatred. Never stops here.

Who hates the Rangers?

You were a successful franchise without a top 5 pick for years. Made it deep in the playoffs several times and don’t have any dirty players.

Lundqvist going crazy is funny but beyond that. Zero hatred here.

Why? Caps lock Wilson up through his prime, including UFA years, for same money.

People hate Wilson cause hes pretty dirty. But whatever, he proved his worth as a player is year no doubt. Let people knock him for his reg season stats and show his value in the post-season.

Hayes was signed to a 1yr deal for a reason

It was likely his decision to test free agency.
But it is a good thing moving forward and here is why………….
1- This rebuild should take at least 2yrs. Hayes will be approaching 28yrs old in the spring of the second season. Do you want to lock him up for 5+m for the two re build years playing in his prime and then pay him that to play out the next 3 or 4 seasons as an aging vet? That doesn’t seem like money well spent by a rebuilding team.
2- He should demand a solid trade return.
3- There are several big upcoming UFA’s to consider in the upcoming seasons.
4- With Zib, Andersson, Howden and Chytil, Hayes would surely become a 3rd line C in a couple of seasons. Do you want to pay a older 3C 5+m a season for 3 or 4 yrs?

Good for Hayes and the Rangers really.
The money's a bit high, but, they'll get to likely receive a big return come trade deadline; this also should help Hayes get a nice payday in UFA come this summer. For the Rangers, they have to rebuild anyway, so, maximizing your tradeable assets while you can is the right move IMO.

Could see Hayes getting a big payday in the summer from a team like Montreal who'll still need centers come next October.
