Glad the Canes get a little extra in the deal, but 2 2nd rounders is an absolute steal for this kid.

For sure. But not bad considering he wasn't signing with the Canes. Compare those two 2nds to the single 6th Edmonton got for Marino, and Carolina made out like gangbusters in comparison (obviously not similar prospects at the time of the trades, but still).

Given the situation, this was probably the best solution for all parties involved since he was going to the NYR regardless, whether that was this year or next. Rangers got him a year early which helps the team this year and down the road, Fox got to leave college and go to his preferred team, Carolina didn't lose him for nothing.

Fox played his 30th game of the season. It's official, Canes get 2 x 2nds for Fox.

Fox's stock skyrocketed after he was drafted.

Agreed. What you got for Fox vs what calibre of player he is, it was cheap for NYR. However, Fox wasn't signing in Carolina and NYR paid a premium to grab Fox a year early. That's a damn good haul for a guy you were at risk of losing for nothing.

Yup. Fox will be worth it for NYR so that they could do things on their terms, but Carolina got very good value for a prospect that wasn't going to sign.

Will probably go bump the Carolina <> Calgary thread to tie a bow on that one but here's what it looks like as of now

CGY > Lindholm + Hanafin

for

CAR > Hamilton, Ferland (left as UFA) + NYR 2019 2nd + NYR 2020 2nd

CGY > Lindholm + Hanafin

for

CAR > Hamilton, Ferland (left as UFA) + NYR 2019 2nd + NYR 2020 2nd

And we already know what the NYR 2019 ended up being. Carolina traded that 2019 NYR 2nd (37th OA) to Ottawa for 44th OA and 83rd overall. Carolina then selected Jamieson Rees (44OA) and
Anttoni Honka (83 OA).

So to update:

CGY > Lindholm+Hanifin
CAR > Hamilton + 1 year of Ferland (left as UFA) + Jamieson Rees + Anttoni Honka + NYR 2020 2nd round pick.

I think the deal still favors Calgary though because the picks/prospects are still unknowns and Lindholm (mainly) and Hanifin have more term.

Right, forgot to dive deeper into that 2019 2nd rounder. I guess we'll see what happens with the 2020 2nd rounder and if that changes into anything else.

Also, fair to note that letting Ferland walk as a UFA allowed Carolina to trade for Haula and sign for Dzingel. Not exactly Ferland out and Dzingel + Haula in but it certainly helped facilitate that.

Lindholm was fantastic for the Flames last year and Hanifin didn't really make a jump from what he was in Carolina. Lindholm has been fine this year but not at the level he was last year. I haven't followed Hanifin closely this year but his stat line looks pretty rough. Hamilton has obviously been fantastic and right now would be Norris runner up or close to it. Hard to argue with that as a Canes fan.

Might end of up being and win-win-win all around

This what makes for a good trade! Rangers might have a goalie graduating college this year in Tyler Wall that might not sign with us due to lots of goalies. We could reciprocate to canes this summer.

Wall is a bit different situation. Wall is a UFA this summer so there is no incentive for Carolina to reciprocate (in terms of giving up a pick) because even in the odd chance he did sign with Carolina, they wouldn't be getting him a year early like the case with NYR and Fox. Also, Fox was 100% going to sign in NY after the trade, there were no doubts. There's no guarantee that Wall would sign in Carolina if he goes UFA.

Just as a follow up FYI. Hanifin stayed second pair for the vast majority of last year which was fine, he wasn't passing Gio onto the top pairing and we'd been told he flipped between second pairing and third pairing in Carolina, so some growth. This year we've been spoon feeding him minutes lately and he's looked good. Last night was the first time in a while he's had less than 22 minutes, and he's had games upwards of 24 minutes and played more than any of our players.

Dougie's been phenomenal this year without a doubt. I just hope it's consistent all year.

Now that we are all chummy, can we win a game or two against you please? Thanks.

Oh yeah correct. I am just saying something to keep an eye since teams have a good trading relationship. Maybe trade a a 4th or fifth to talk to him in May.

Rangers could have had him for free if they waited, just like Trouba. While being on path for Lafreniere/Byfield instead of a low bottom 10 pick and having Shattenkirk on a bounceback season instead of a buyout. A+ management lol

Meanwhile Marino cost a 6th and is just as good as Fox.

1) There's value in getting him in now vs. next year in terms of his development.
2) There's a chance (slight as it may be) that he changes his mind before next year had he stayed in school, particularly if he felt the Rangers didn't want to make a move to get him in now.
3) As been shown the past number of years, a "worse" record doesn't do all that much for chances at #1 and #2 picks.

Meanwhile Marino cost a 6th and is just as good as Fox.

Yes, because 30 games on a good team vs. 30 games on a worse team is the be all, end all when it comes to saying if someone is "just as good".
