The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired 6-1, 190-lb defenseman Andrew MacDonald from the New York Islanders in exchange for F Matt Mangene, a third-round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, and a second-round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

He will wear uniform No. 47 for the Flyers.

MacDonald, 27 (9/7/1986), has appeared in 63 games for the Islanders this season, during which time he has posted four goals and 20 assists for 24 points. He led the Islanders and is currently ranked eighth in the NHL in average ice time at 25:25 per game, and he leads the NHL with 198 blocked shots.

A native of Judique, Nova Scotia, MacDonald was drafted by the Islanders in the sixth round (160th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft and has played his entire professional career with the Islanders organization. In 295 career NHL games, he has recorded 17 goals and 72 assists for 89 points while averaging 20 minutes or more per game in each of the last five seasons, including 2013-14.

MacDonald has also appeared in 114 games for the Islanders’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, over parts of four seasons (2006-10). He recorded 13 goals and 33 assists for 46 points and represented Bridgeport at the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic.

MacDonald earns $550,000 on the final year of his entry-level deal and is expected to be seeking at least a four-year contract averaging $4 million or more this offseason.

"Andrew MacDonald is a solid two-way defenseman who brings us depth and experience," Holmgren said.

The Flyers go into Wednesday’s deadline with approximately $2.38 million in available cap space.

The 6-foot-1, 191-pound MacDonald played huge minutes with the Islanders -- 25:25 a game -- and leads the NHL with 198 blocked shots.

Since the start of the 2010-11 season, MacDonald is second in the NHL in total blocks with 666. Only the Rangers’ Dan Girardi has more, with 675.

Along with Nick Grossmann (146), the Flyers now have two of the top four shot-blockers in the league on their blue line.

The Flyers gave the Isles prospect Matt Mangene, a forward, and a pair of draft picks -- a third-rounder in 2014 and second-rounder in 2015.

Assets:
Moves the puck out of the defensive zone efficiently. Is a poised defender with a good hockey brain who can log an awful lot of ice time. Smart and technically strong, he also has some offensive ability.

Flaws:
Is somewhat prone to injury. Also, he would be best served to start playing a more consistent game in the physicality department in order to maximize his shutdown acumen at the highest level.

Career Potential:
Mobile big-minute defenseman.

Hopefully this means Grossmann and Mez are gone. Would love to roll with:

Timonen-Coburn
MacDonald-Streit
Gus-Schenn

But that wont happen because we know Homgren and Berube hate gus and love Gorssmann and mez

He's a Mobile guy isnt going to put up a ton of points but he makes good decisions with the puck. Hes 27

Isles were expecting a 1st for him, most other teams fans think we got him for pretty cheap.

If the Flyers move Mez for a 2015 second rounder, is everyone okay with the trade then?

Even without it, it should bump somebody who can't skate out.

I'm wondering if this is the year that they realize Grossman just doesn't cut it.

Something's got to give real soon. There has to be a taker for Meszaros. Or maybe the Schenns are being packaged together.

Either way, I like this a lot. We've been relying too much on Coburn to play this role; AMac will give him some support.

It is BRUTAL in the sense we have given up our 2nd rd pick in a deep 2015 draft with no indication that he resigns for good money.

So yes Brutal is the right word here. If Homer can swing Mez into a 2nd rd pick that would be fine.

I'd be looking at the Ducks for Vataanen for sure. Would they take Downie?
