Devils wern't getting more than 2 in 2021 so good for them. From Isles the question isn't so much getting Greene but couldn't you have used a 2 plus to get a better d-man. Curious what Dillon's price ends up being.

No, it's using a 2 plus to get a top forward, their biggest need. There may not be a better dman than Greene traded this week. But Isles probably could have paid a bit less for him. I doubt he would have waived his NTC for anyone else.

The guy is 37 years old and is nothing more than a bottom pairing veteran guy at this point. 2nd round pick isn’t market value for that. That’s way too much to give up.
it was too much but Lou likes his vets and knows Andy. Isles will like him because he can play all the way up the lineup. He's great on the PK and will make his D partner much better. Overpayment but a need for the Isles IMO. Hope they have a long run this yr.

Anyone who saw what happened to the Isles after Boychuk’s injury last year should understand why it was important for the team to pick up a quality vet D, especially with Pelech already out. This is valuable insurance and it cost a pick that MIGHT help the team three years from now.

If this was trade deadline day and its no move or greene trade I get it. Just seems early to make move for someone like Greene. Maybe they trade 2020 2nd as well in seperate trade.

I'm going to guess Lamoriello picks up a forward with term that wasn't on anyone's trade boards. I also think it is going to be an overpay. Whatever, I can't blame the guy for sacrificing the then for now, even though I think the stars would have to align perfectly (as well as other teams suddenly fall apart) in order for us to get by Washington, Pitt, TB or Boston (and Carolina is built to stymy our game plan as evidenced last year in the broom-slashing they gave us).

Doesn’t matter how old he is, he’s a rental. It’s not a 2nd round pick, it’s a 2nd round pick in next year’s draft, which is less valuable.

I am still stunned that we got a 2nd for Greene even if it's Next Years.

I really believe Lou would be the only person who would give up a 2nd for Andy Greene.

I was fully prepared for a mid-to-late 3rd rounder(at best, if we're lucky) for Andy.

Did not expect this late Christmas Present. lol

(of course that pales in comparison to what we got with Blake Coleman but that thread is already up and I made my point there).

A 2nd round pick is a 2nd round pick. And age does matter when you go to war in the playoffs and you’re nothing more than a depth dman

By the time that pick is playing, if ever the season will be remembered for a success or failure. This 2nd rounder will never make it a failure, losing another D man will. But I do get losing assets sucks, I am mad we dont get enough ever so we have other problems.

Really the only people that would affect would be Isles fans with Pulock jerseys.

If I had a team that I thought could do some damage in the playoffs and I had the need for a penalty killing veteran D, I would give up a 2nd round pick for Andy Greene with zero hesitation. I think he's a perfect fit for the Isles and I think people that are acting like this is a gross overpayment don't really understand Greene's game - and that includes some Devils fans in this thread.

I don't know why any General Manager in their right mind would accept a 3rd round pick for a player of Greene's ability and pedigree. He's worth more than that.

As has been pointed out several times, Ron Hainsey got a 2nd round pick and a prospect and Greene today is better than Hainsey was then.

Age doesn't matter for a few months if the player is currently healthy, durable, and productive. And I think you underestimate the current ability of Greene. There might not be a better defenseman traded this week.

Another thing to consider that Andy Greene has spoken in the past of his desire to play on after this season. If he does well, Lou will bring him back on a cheap 1 year deal.

Would you rather have a 2nd this year or next year?

I actually think that it would have been better for the Isles to give up this years pick. A late second round pick for Greene is pretty much whatever, tbh. Last year, Lovejoy got a 3rd rounder + a 7th D man in Carrick. I think Greene is better and you could argue that a future second + ach/echl fodder is a lower return.

That being said, getting next years 2nd may actually be better because you just never know. I mean, would anyone be super, super shocked if the Isles cratered next year and end up finishing inside the top 10 worst records for hte year? I don't expect it to happen, but i wouldn't be "shocked" if it did. Then you ostensibly gave up a top 40 pick in next years draft which is pretty solid value for Greene.

I think what people are (naturally) overlooking is that they brought in Greene to play the shutdown role that Pelech played with Pulock on their top pairing.

Pelech’s shutdown/stay at home style allowed Pulock to focus more on pushing up the ice to create offense, but when Pelech got injured Pulock was forcer into the shutdown role on his pairing because NYI has no other lefty that plays like Pelech at least until now.

I think you could argue Greene has played that top pairing shutdown role better than Dillon over their careers (not going to compared Martinez because of his extra contract year), and on top of that Lou knows him and Greene knows the division/conference.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Greene re-up with the Islanders for another year or two as a bottom pairing/depth guy who HAS played up at the top of the lineup.

So much of why this deal works for the Isles specifically comes down to how much they play a system that highlights Greene's strengths and downplay his weaknesses. He's going to get the most down low forward support he's had in five years.
