Quote Jay Fester the GM of Calgary Flames after trading down from 14 to pick 21 to select him @ 2012 draft!!!

” In 10 years Mark Jankowski may be the best player chosen in the 2012 draft”

1 year in 2023 $775k……… sounds like good value

Calgary could have drafted Hertl / Tom Wilson or T.B Goalie Vasilevsky@ pick 14

Good for him for still being able to collect a pay check 11 years later playing a game we all love! ( I’m not going to make $775 k US next year Playing hockey)

As much as it's fun to poke at the Flames for going way off the board with the complete "mystery box" in Jankowski...that range of the draft had a lot of other guys who ended up being busts, or journeymen at best. As well as some guys who only found their stride after being given up on by their original drafting team. The "hype" for what Jankowski could become makes it a lot funnier, but other teams did worse in the same area of the draft.

It was a pretty weird draft overall in retrospect. A lot of really bad decisions made by a lot of teams. Plenty of "safe" slam dunks that went completely sideways. And a lot of the most "questionable" decisions at the draft table that year, ended up being the best decisions in the end.

But anyway...nice that Jankowski has managed to carve out a decent journeyman depth player career for himself. Sometimes you get a Tage Thompson. More often you get a Jankowski or a Poehling or worse.

Yep, just look at Calgary's needs at the time.. their best center prospect was maybe Nemisz who was putting up around .5ppg in the AHL with Backlund looking like he'd fill a bottom six defensive role in the NHL. Calgary drafted Jankowski, Monahan and then Bennett with their first pick in three consecutive years trying to draft someone that could fill that #1 C role. The only center in that 2012 draft that's even remotely capable as a top 6 center is Hertl, and he had years of sheltered development. So yeah, better picks could be had, but that draft stunk.

I still hate that Poile traded down to pick Pickard at 18 when he could've stayed put and gotten Karlsson. Different draft and the same concept. He later picked Josi in the second. If he had done that, he would've had two drafts, 5 years apart that he selected an entire top pairing for his D.

Or you could get a Yakupov and a Puljujarvi at 1st OA and 4th OA :(
