I thought the Leafs haven't had a captain since Phaneuf was traded in 2016?

The right choice. Who cares about a "streak", better to think about the weight of carrying that 'C' after Yzerman, Lidstrom and Zetterberg.

Same with Vancouver. Though it's pretty obvious they want Bo to take it next season.

Captaincies are pretty overrated, they're just for the media to zone in on a guy to ask trite questions. Refs will go to veterans or key guys to inform of decisions, etc.

Comes as a surprise to nobody. Everybody knows Larkin is the chosen one, but they weren't going to give it to him with Kronwall still on the team.

And Zetterberg still technically on the roster.

Plus the wings are going to be pretty awful this season. Why saddle a young player with that.

If there were a glimmer of hope that Z were coming back that may hold up the captaincy, but they've already confirmed he's done, so I think that's irrelevant.

Every team seems to be ditching the "captain" these days

Yeah I wonder if this technically breaks the streak for them always having had a captain. Z is technically still on the roster so they do have a captain still.

Larkin will get it next year once Kronwall is gone

No. It’s more that some teams are either really bad right now and have a guy they want to be their C but don’t want to burden them with dealing with the losses and having the media hound them every game. Spread that duty around makes sense.

Plus, unless you have your guy in some markets it’s hard to do a brown to Kopitar, or Thornton to pavelski, or modano to morrow, or Mackenzie to barkov handoff.

It went from linden to messier and the media freaked out in Vancouver.

Out of respect for their real captain, who can't play hockey anymore because of his back injury.

This is probably for the best. Since 1986, the only captains have been Yxerman, Lidstrom and Zetterberg. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill, and I don’t think the next captain will be any of these players getting the A this season.

Seems like Larkin is a logical choice for next captain

yeah they probably just don't think he's quite ready yet

would be pretty surprising if he wasn't the next captain at this point,it would probably take something major along the lines of drafting Jack Hughes or signing Karlsson to even cast any doubt into it and even then he might still get it

They'll name an official captain once Zs contract expires
