When looking this statistically, it's pretty hard to nominate one.

But I really wonder how big impact Andrei Markov's return has made for the Canadiens. I just have to pick him.

Markov
OEL
Chara

So far.
Let's nominate the leading scorer then .. Oh, wait , this is something the DRW fanbase absolutely does not wan't! Sorry forgot about that, silly me..:sarcasm:

Markov is a PP specialist. He's generated no offense 5v5. Seriously. 0.00 points per 60 mins. His corsi is pretty bad too. So I can't see Markov being a factor at this point in the season.

Kronwall is top 5 no matter how you slice it. He will improve his defensive game and then ...

"PP specialist", who plays 24 minutes a night (team high), has also second highest qualcomp from Canadiens D and 2nd most PK time? He has also most Game Winning goals on their team. :D

It's interesting that Kronner's plus/minus has improved since he's been paired with Ericsson. There isn't much in his even strength performance that suggests Kronwall is a Norris candidate. His QoC and TOI suggests he's a second pairing d-man. His corsi suggests the same. How many of those 2nd pairing guys are deemed to be the best defenseman in the league?

If he's going to get any recognition it will be for his power play point production. I just can't see that happening.

Yea, the guy is still good. He just doesn't have the skating to bring a lot of offense 5v5. Many players would become completely useless losing two or three steps like that, so good for him.

They really should have a "best offensive defensemen" trophy and a "best defensive defensemen" trophy. To say that Kronwall should be in the running for a trophy that by defintion means "defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position" is a joke. This trophy should go to the best two-way defensemen. I'll vote for guys like Kronwall, Karlsson, Green for a best offensive defensemen trophy all day. For an all-around ability trophy? Get real.

In my books guys like Pieterangleo or Shea Weber should win just about every year. Regardless of if they are putting up a ton of points, or top 5 in the league in points.

Kronwall winning or even being considered would be yet another example of what's wrong with the Norris Trophy.

Can anyone honestly say that, if they had a hockey team and could choose one defenseman for the season, they'd choose Kronwall? That kronwall would make the top 3? Top 5? Top 10?

I imagine some people will. Those are probably the same people who thought Lidstrom was God on Skates until the very end.
To those people, I ask, if we had the marked cornered on great defensemen, and we had Z and D, then why have we not gone anywhere in the playoffs recently?

Lidstrom was great because he put up offense and he was great in his own end as well. Had one of the best sticks, as well as defensive instincts and decision-making for a defensemen I have seen. Kronwall is 0% comparable to Lidstrom in my opinion. I also would gladly take 10 defensemen in this league over Kronwall.

What does this mean? Not trying to be rude at all, I just don't understand what you're trying to say here.

It's a question to people who believe kronwall is among the best-and who believed Lidstrom was a top 5 defenseman until the end -- two opinions I disagree with...

I can't believe this got to 3 pages. I don't think Kronwall will ever be winning a Norris. Karlsson was a lock before he was injured, I'd hate to be a Senators fan right now

problem with an offensive d-man trophy is that it would be hard to determine the winner.

i think most fans would expect that the highest scoring d-man to win, like an art ross for d-men, but it is more impressive, imo, to score 50p for a terrible offensive team than 65p for a great offensive team. d-men generally get their points b/c of the play of F's.

for example, in '88 ray bourque led boston in scoring with 81p. next was ken linseman at 74p and then steve kasper at 70p. boston's PP was 3rd worst (16.59%). bourque had 34p on PP.

gary suter was the highest scoring d-man with 91p. calgary's leading scorers were loob (106p), mike bullard (103p) and nieuwendyk (92p). calgary had a dominant PP in that period and it was the best in '88 (28.46%). suter had 43p on PP.

i would vote for bourque over suter in that situation.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson really looks the most "Nicklas Lidström -like Mr. Norris" -player at this season.

1st Power-Play unit Quarterback
1st PK unit player
+/- leader of all Norris candidates (+12), and not in a strong team.
6th best scoring defenceman (3+11=14p)
Shut-down defensive role (highest team qualcomp) with Zbynek Michalek.
25:25 average Ice-Time (12th highest of NHL defencemen)

I can't find anybody who beats him in these Overall standars like Norris should be.

I am in the minority, but I would take Ekman-Larsson over Karlsson.

I did not read this whole thread but heck no. He is an average top line defenseman and his play proves that.

I don't think he's top 5 in his own division, let alone the league. I'd take Keith, Seabrook, Weber, Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk among others over Kronwall.

I'm glad Kronwall is playing better lately, but he's FAR from a top 5 in the league kind of guy.

Now you're talking. ;) I'd put both Ekman-Larsson and Suter as safe bets to be finalists.

Kronwall is +5 in his last 5 games and has climbed from -9 to -4.
Babcock paired him with Lashoff and Kronwall struggled a lot. Now it seems he is finding his game.
