Can somebody please explain what it means that he "exercised his right not to play"? What does that mean and why would a player do that? Thank you.

NHL players are entitled to 3 days off for the Christmas break under the CBA. Because of when he was sent down, he was an NHL player at the time of the break, but Providence played Thursday which would have been an off day so he had the option to take it off.

Probably chose it to be with family?

Since he was demoted to Providence during the NHL Christmas break, it's in the CBA that said demoted player still has the option to exercise his right to the NHL break.

He chose to exercise his right and likely spend the time with his family like he would have if he were still in Boston.

Nothing to see here.

Is there a recall thread for Johnson? Don't see one, so I'll use this. Emergency call up for NJ tonight for the game in Ottawa.

@JamieErdahl: Carl Soderberg got "dinged up, feeling some symptoms" per Claude, hence the Nick Johnson call up. Soderberg did not travel either. #bruins
