I don't doubt he had trouble sleeping, but 21 days without sleep will kill you, so I don't think he did. 21 days without uninterrupted sleep? Sure.

In the original article out of Sweden he says he doesn't like to talk about concussions, as it has gotten too much attention in media. One can agree or disagree with that, but I thought I should mention it because he states he doesn't wanna contribute to scaring kids away from playing the sport.

"Never for a second have I regret what I've done within the sport of ice hockey. Even if I've been struggling after, it has been worth it. Every second that I got to practice and hang around the guys made it worth it. It has been so damn fun".

So yeah, there's no hard feelings towards the game or the league from what I can tell. But it's a sad read nonetheless.

That's physically impossible. So no he didn't.

This must be exaggerated. I'm not sure it's possible to go 3 weeks without any sleep at all. The current world record for not sleeping is 11 days.

Like I've said in the past, once reliable and feasible premortem CTE testing becomes available, things are going to drastically change. Once we can quantify just how damaged your brain is when you're still alive is going to be the game changer.

Come on, people... It clearly means 21 days without a normal sleeping cycle. We cycle through different levels of sleep throughout the night. Wallin went 21 days without a REAL sleep cycle. REM sleep is more important than most people realize. If you're not getting into the deep levels of sleep your body and mind are not going to recover. Not allowing prisoners to get uninterrupted sleep is a form of psychological torture. So Wallin's body was basically torturing itself...

It says he would doze off for an hour at a time (presumably his body simply hit a shutdown mode of sorts) but that he wasn't getting anything close to actual REM sleep. More like a brief catnap and then back to being awake the rest of the night.

This is the sort of thing people go through when they're literally being tortured.

Man that sucks.

A few years back, I developed a hyperthyroid and I couldn't get more than a couple hours sleep a night and maybe, if I was lucky, an hour nap in the afternoon for like two months. It was definitely not pleasant.

I can honestly say I have a solid understanding of why someone with a serious illness would want to off themselves.

No. It actually didnt clearly state that.

Both the thread title and the original tweet said that he went 21 days without sleep. Full stop. It was actually incredibly vague. Not clear at all, which is why the posters you quoted expressed doubt.

iirc sleep cycles goes through 4 stages which are 1.5 hours long, which is why it's recommended to sleep 4.5, 6, 7.5 or 9 hours. E.g 4.5 hours of sleep gives better rest than 5 hours for the average person.

Since he's waking up ~1 hour, he's probably not hitting REM or jolting awake during it. So he's not just getting inadequate sleep, the quality of it is poor as well

I wonder if it's memory loss. He may not have some memory of falling asleep or waking up.

If he has memory loss, it's probably from lack of sleep. Our brains create memories while we sleep. Not that I'm a neurologist or anything, but sleep is everything. I put getting proper and complete rest wayyyyy above nutrition and exercise, in terms of what I think is the most important thing we can do for ourselves towards longer living.

Give me the chain-smoking couch potato who gets his 8+ hours sleep every night, over the gym rat vegan doin' the 5 hour "nap".

Having said that, my personal record is 52.5 hrs. :P

I have serious sleep issues where I can only sleep for like an hour at a time maybe 2-3 hrs/night. I've learned to deal with it, but it's frustrating. I can't imagine what it would be like for someone to experience it out of the blue for 3 weeks straight.

Are we really going to argue the semantics of this?

I've once spent a month sleeping only 2-3 hours a night due to medication I had to take and it was the worst month of my life, ended up in the ER for exhaustion. Not cool, can't even imagine how it would've felt it I knew it was just my brain acting up. Hopefully they find a way to get him more regular sleep, that's an awful thing to go through.

I recently went through a period in my life where I did not get more than 1-2 hours (generally 15-20 minutes at a time) of sleep a day for about 3-4 months. It literally took some super strong prescription sleeping pills to finally knock me out for 8+ hours. It was a horrible experience that I never want to go through again as I was just in a constant zombie state.

Yet Ekblad gets called a ***** for not dropping his gloves.
And Marchand is perfectly within his rights to pump his fist into Eller.

Imagine having to deal with that because you over celebrated a goal......
I was wondering why we weren’t talking about Marchand in here yet. Thanks
