We traded Burakovsky immediately before signing Hagelin, Panik and Hathaway. The circumstances are different - Burakovsky is a skill player but as more middle-six, and he’d requested a trade after a down-year under Reirden.
But still, the Caps used Burky’ cap space in part to sign three guys to shore up the bottom six with defensive capability and grit, not too dissimilarly to NYR have. Burky and Buch are the same age, and their stats the last two years are almost identical.
It’s not that there’s a problem saying you don't have space/room for another sniper/playmaker because you need to add PK specialists or grit or shutdown types. But spending
that much of your cap hit on those guys is a huge mistake. Paying $1.75m to a guy who will likely serve part of the season as an extra and won’t see more than 8 minutes TOI a night is just silly.
