NHL Series Multiplayer Coop Question

Can be specific to NHL 18 since that's probably what I'll end up getting... but I'm guessing the question would apply to earlier ones too.

I have a PS4, that's what I normally game on. But I'm probably going to pick up an Xbox One as well, for a few reasons but partly because my buddy whom I normally game with online has one and it'd give us some more options than our lousy PC's. One of those options being the NHL series.

We don't really like playing against eachother though, we'd rather be on the same team. The whole EASHL thing or whatever is probably overkill, but I think it could work.

Is it possible to do just a normal exhibition game, against other people or AI, with someone else online on your team? Kinda like how how they'd join in as a guest if they were sitting at your console... but them being online instead?
