NHL fans will get an up-close, all-access look at some of their favorite stars with the upcoming "NHL Revealed: A Season Like No Other" series beginning in mid-January.
The series will begin Jan. 22 on NBCSN and Jan. 23 on CBC. It will be re-broadcast in Canada on Sportsnet on Jan. 26. The joint announcement was made Monday by the NHL, the National Hockey League Players' Association, NBCSN and CBC.
NHL Revealed is a seven-part series telling the stories of more than two dozen of the League's top stars as they prepare for and participate in 2013-14 regular-season games, including the four 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Serie games and the Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic. Additionally, the cameras will follow the stars during the February trip to compete in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
Players expected to be featured in "NHL Revealed" include Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh; Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks; brothers Daniel and Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks; John Tavares of the New York Islanders; and goaltenders Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers and Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings.
"'NHL Revealed' is all about answering our fans' demand for more great content and our partners' demand for new ways to engage with our fans," said NHL Chief Operating Officer John Collins. "Julie Bristow and Ross Greenburg are accomplished storytellers who can weave a compelling narrative through seven episodes by following our top players and highlighting the subplots and storylines that are sure to emerge. The access our clubs and players are generously providing is what will make this a great series."

Nice to hear they are trying to satisfy fans' interest.

Why didn't they just continue NHL36 (I'm not sure if it's canceled) and answer their partners' demand for new ways to engage with their fans by creating a new show on NHLN or NBCSN? How about a single show that involves statistics? They should have a basic stats show and then something like MLB Confidential where it's based on sabremetrics. I think that would answer everyone's demand instead of continuing the same exact show with it's third name.

The NHL certainly needs better programming on NBCSN. Why not replace with NHL Rivals with the stats show idea, or add "Pro Hockey Talk" during the 4 PM or 6 PM slot? A hot stove show would be nice as well. The NHL and MLB's hot stove is the most interesting in sports.

This isn't a new way to engage with fans, is what I'm saying. It's not new for the NHL and it's not new for NBCSN.

Like bagel bites, I'd like to see more of the bubble players rather than the stars we see all the time.

I'd like to see a day inside the life of the likes of Adam hall, raffi Torres, and so on. Players that are constantly going from team to team and bouncing around waivers

Sharks have profiled a couple "days in the life" of players on local TV show "Shark Byte". Has more focused on "day to day" activities than "where I am in my career" retrospectives, but there have been interviews that have focused on the later. Ross Greenburg, guru who came up with the "HBO 24/7" idea, will be producing this NHL Revealed series. And this will get more play in US/Canada with NBC and CBC involvement/broadcasting. Will not be a "watered down 24/7" version, but have that vibe.

... Skeptics immediately figured it was a quick way to boost the League’s bottom line, and get revenues surging forward again to cover those work-stoppage losses.

Collins doesn’t believe that’s necessarily the motivation.

“To me, that’s not it. These games do well. They’re profitable,†he said.

“When you get into markets like Vancouver and see the mittens and the toques and the scarves and everything, it’s almost like having a 31st NHL team with all the revenue that’s created.â€

All the more reason to hold these games after the lockout, actually. With strong revenues benefiting both the NHL teams and their players, the NHLPA was on board with playing and promoting the Stadium Series games, even if the lockout was a bitter affair.

“Work stoppages are business. It’s not that they don’t want to grow the game for the right reasons. They dealt with it, and move on,†said Steve Webb, Divisional Player Representative for the NHLPA.

Five outdoor games next season are not envisioned.

Canada's media rights will be sold by the end of the year (I'm guessing that's calendar year).

NHL Revealed may be repackaged for international markets. Example given of Kopitar-centric for Slovenia -- not necessarily in the works, but international rights holders are interested in the footage and might be done in the future.

Greenburg talks about the challenge of producing NHL Revealed.

"I've never undertaken a reality-based show with this number of teams and characters at your disposal," Greenburg told NHL.com. "You can look at that as a plus in that you have so much ground to cover that you can pick and choose some colorful characters with unique stories and dive into it that way. Or, you can look at it as a negative and say, 'My god, what am I going to have to leave on the edit room floor?' "
