Watching a lot of hockey is not good enough. Unless you've actually refed at a decent level then you have no idea how hard it can be. The view from the stands/camera is totally different from on the ice.

The 2nd ref is to help with seeing stuff behind the play and also make it so the ref is not too far behind the play (Since NHLers skate much faster than your average ref). But the second ref will cause consistency issues, one ref might let something slide, and the other ref doesn't call it because he's far away/doesn't see it. The play moves to the other side of the ice, and now the second ref sees it and calls it because his "line" of what consititues a penalty is not the same as the other ref.

That's the whole point. Rules should be the same for everyone. They're not.
That's why you have the guy calling a penalty 30 feet away from him while the guy that's 2 feet from it let's it go. It's freaking Pejorative Slured.

But the consistency this year is particularly bad. Even Darren Dreger said the complaints he's been receiving from GMs this year is the worst he's seen since working the NHL. So, it's not just fans noticing it.
Dreger said this morning that officiating will most likely be the main subject of discussion in the next GM meeting because teams across the league are completely lost. He also said that the officiating had been discussed previously, but that the refs are not doing what was demanded.

Never said Refereeing is easy. Doesn't mean that they're doing a good job.

That's coming from Dreger, who's reporting what GMs have told him. So, if you don't want to take my word for it, take Dreger's.

it's true about the faceoff ejections though, really annoying. soon, we'll have to poisition our true center at the wing so he'll be able to take the faceoff after the other guy gets bounced. a pre emptive **** you!

MT's already doing that on occasion. In the last game especially, you will notice many times where Pleky is on the wing at the start and has Gio thrown out of the faceoff only to take his place the second time.

The only way to get that consistency is to have them "try" to call everything which will lead to lots of phantom calls, because the refs will be pressured into calling it even if they are not really sure. Not too mention there will be no flow to the game which would make it boring.

I haven't noticed the game to game consistency being any worse this year (Though I don't watch much non Habs games). But there were a few really high profile blown calls. So I think that's where a lot of the talk is coming from.

Saying the referee's need to be better is great, there's obviously room for improvement but how can the league achieve that is a difficult question to answer.

Reffing is done subjectively by humans, it's nowhere close to perfect in any league. There are no robots and even in sports where they use bots like tennis, they still get them wrong from time to time. The reffing has been no better or worse than any other year, there's just way more games in a shortened time frame.
