If I'm not mistaken Kyle Wellwood is at 122 right now. The next closest in the NHL is somewhere in the 30s. This has me thinking Wellwood's streak could be significant.

Would anyone happen to know the all-time streak for consecutive games without taking a penalty?

My bet would be Val Fonteyne. From 65-68, he played 156 games with no penalties. From 70-72, he player 138 games with no penalties. In the years between he had a grand total of 2 minor penalties.

Pappy beat me to it. Val Fonteyne played three consecutive seasons with no penalties (156 games) from 1966-68. In 1965 he had 6 PIM in 43 games, and in 1969 he earned just 2 PIM in 74 games. Depending on when the penalties occurred in the '65 and '69, Fonteyne's streak could have been well over 200 games.

According to Joe Pelletier's site, Fonteyne had a consecutive games streak of 185 games without a penalty.

Yep. Acording to the 1986 Hockey Compendium, Fonteyne has the two longest streaks in NHL history:

185 games: 3/3/1965 - 12/1/1968
157 games: 2/8/1970 - 4/2/1972

He actually had 4 PM during the 1966 playoffs in the middle of his 185 game streak, but since it's a regular season streak it doesn't count against it.

The longest streak by a defenceman is Bill Quackenbush at 137 games.

Wellwood played in 106 games (including playoffs) for the Windsor Spitfires and didn't pick up a single penalty. It actually got to the point where he could trip anyone he wanted and get away with it because the refs didn't want to break the streak (or at least it seemed liked it).

Yes, I'm bumping a 12 year old thread. But I think we now have a definitive answer:
