Gerry Melnyk for the Flyers.

He was acquired from the Blues in the offseason prior to the 1968-69 season. However, he suffered a heart attack in training camp, immediately retired as a player and became a scout with the team after being offered a position. Following his first season in his managerial role, he was the person considered most instrumental in drafting Bobby Clarke.

Expansion related..

Charlie Huddy and Dave Babych - Minnesota North Stars

Tim Kerr and Bengt Gustafsson - San Jose

Glenn Healy - Anaheim, then selected by Tampa in Phase 2 of the expansion draft….Then the Lightning, on the same day, traded Glenn Healy to the New York Rangers in exchange for a third-round pick in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft….Healy then goes on to win a Cup with the Rangers in 94’.

Darren Puppa - Florida

Uwe Krupp and Mike Richter - Nashville

Waiver Draft related..

Randy Gregg - Vancouver
Bengt Gustafsson - Detroit

This was a good one back in the day to get around leaving players unprotected for the waiver draft..
  • 1989-Sep-28 Pete Peeters Traded from Philadelphia Flyers with Keith Acton to Winnipeg Jets for future considerations
  • 1989-Oct-03 Pete Peeters Traded from Winnipeg Jets with Keith Acton to Philadelphia Flyers for future considerations

Believe Jeff Brubaker was in the Philadelphia organization for a brief while (1986-87). Did not play with the big club and spent the season with Hershey (the Flyers' farm team). Then he went on to the New York Rangers (spent about half of the season between them and the minors) and then on to Detroit for one game and the rest with Adirondack in the AHL in 1988-89.

Jets traded a seventh to Florida for Bogdan Kiselevich, whom they never played. He returned to Europe in the offseason.

In addition to Valeri Bure never dressing for the Kings, there are a few other players the team acquired who never played for them.

Radek Bonk: Acquired from Ottawa for a third round pick, 77th overall. Ten minutes later, the Kings sent Bonk and Cristobal Huet to Montreal for Mathieu Garon and a third rounder (95th overall).

Stephane Quintal: The Kings acquired Quintal's rights from Montreal one day after the Garon-Bonk trade. Unfortunately, the lockout was looming, and Quintal was never signed and opted to retire.

David Karpa: The Kings acquired Karpa from the Quebec Nordiques in 1995, however, he failed a physical, and thus the Kings voided the trade. Days later, the Mighty Ducks would trade for Karpa.

And probably the most infamous King to never dress for the team...
Dale McCourt: The Kings acquired McCourt from Detroit as compensation for losing Rogie Vachon to the Red Wings. McCourt refused to report to the Kings and a major legal battle ensued, which you can read about here: Dale Mccourt, Plaintiff-appellee, v. California Sports, Inc., and the Los Angeles Kings, Inc.,defendants-appellants.dale Mccourt, Plaintiff-appellee, v. The Kings would later trade McCourt back to the Red Wings in exchange for Andre St. Laurent and two first round picks, which turned into Larry Murphy and Doug Smith.
