Bad News Bears

NHL

Joe Pavelski - Henrik Zetterberg - Nathan MacKinnon
Chris Kreider - Mikko Koivu -Alex Semin
Mats Zuccarello - Valteri Filppula - Alex Barkov
Cam Atkinson - Mikael Granlund- Dustin Brown

Not a super strong forward group, but a ton of room to improve for some young talented players, and a group of strong vets. Strong down then middle with great two-way centers, good speed on the outside. A ton of puck possession.

Marc Staal - Kris Letang
Olli Maatta - Hampus Lindholm
Andrei Markov -TJ Brodie

Strong skaters, again - lots of room to improve from two elite rookies, and some veteran presence. Elite puck handlers, and some great PP quarterbacks.

Antti Niemi
Jonathan Bernier

Niemi is a proven starter, a Stanley Cup winner, and has put up some elite numbers in the past few years. Bernier has a ton of talent, and could put together some great seasons with a team like this in front of him. Split games 52/30 ideally.

NFL

QB - Russell Wilson
RB - Jamaal Charles
FB - Rhett Ellison
WR - Torrey Smith
WR - Denarius Moore
WR - Stevie Johnson
TE - Jimmy Graham

I mean, what more can I say. Reigning Superbowl winning QB, and a true leader. Behind him, the consensus number 2 RB in the game. WR core aren't perfect, but a ton of talent, and a ton of catches to be made down-field. Best TE in the game, making catches from everywhere, can line up at TE, in the slot, or as a wide out.

O-line
LT - Joe Thomas
LG - TBA
C - Alex Mack
RG - Brandon Brooks
RT - Eugene Monroe

Joe Thomas and Alex Mack, best in the game at their positions. Rest of the crew are solid pros, with some upside in Brooks and Monroe.

NOTE - Had made the Jordan Gross pick to be my RT prior to his retirement (after a Pro-Bowl season, I remind you). Will need to make another pick - have moved Monroe to RT.

DE - J.J. Watt
DE - Jadeveon Clowney
DT - Dontari Poe
DT - Chris Jones

Good ****ing luck stopping these four. Two elite guys on the outside, two giants inside.

ILB - Brian Cushing
LOLB - Vontaze Burfict
ROLB - Justin Houston

Tons of athleticism, tons of intensity, tons of steroids, tons of white boy anger, tons of tackles.

CB - Tim Jennings
CB - Brandon Browner
FS - Antoine Bethea
SS - Kam Chancellor

They'll take your head off, they'll lock you down, and they'll generally be a real ***** to play against.

K - Steven Hauschka
P - Shane Lechler
KR/PR - Jacoby Ford

NBA

PG - Damien Lillard - Great young PG, hits game winners like no-ones business.
SG - James Harden - Best offensive 2-guard in the league.
SF - Arron Afflalo - Best "3 and D" out there. Total lockdown on elite wings.
PF - Paul Millsap - All-Star, knocks down many a jumper, sneaky dark alley player.
C - Brook Lopez - Best low post offensive in the game. PER off the charts.

They can play crazy fast, they can slow it down. Changing pace in the NBA can destroy defense. They can shoot threes and penetrate. Elite.

Bench AKA "PER Heaven"

Goran Dragic
Ryan Anderson
Al Jefferson
Patrick Beverely
Tony Allen
Marco Belinelli
Nikola Vucevic

I mean, I can't even. Would be an elite 6th man, playing with a big like Al, and shooters like Belinelli and Anderson. Beverely might be the most agitating player in the league, and thrown plenty of elite PG's off their game. Allen can still lock almost anyone down from the perimeter. Vucevic to protect the rim, big man shooter.

Thought people could post team strategies/philosophies in here. I'll post an in-depth NHL one right now because I put the most thought into how to build that team. Will post PP/PK units later.

NHL

General Strategy

My team will play nearly identical systems to Boston and St. Louis: defense first, look for turnovers in the neutral zone, and burn the opposition in quick transition, along with establishing a strong forecheck and trying to pin the opposition in their own zone.

There were two main goals I had for filling out this team:

First, was for every line and combination to essentially be match-up proof on the road. You'll notice that my line-up is essentially nothing but two-way players, even on the wing, and team defense is what this team is built on. Even if I'm going up against Ovechkin-Crosby-Stamkos, I have faith that my lines could at least hold their own with their defensive play and their possession play. The only forwards I wouldn't consider great two-way players are Eric Staal and Rick Nash (and Nash isn't bad at all, he was being used in defensive situations with Team Canada still). Staal can be a bit lazy, but I think moving him to the wing would be most beneficial. He's played the wing before and has less defensive responsibility. More importantly though, is that every player on the blueline can be considered a great shutdown d-man. I may only have one truly elite d-man with McDonagh, but everyone else plays tough minutes and is effective when faced with that. Also, while it's not a very good offensive unit, they are still effective at moving the puck up the ice and keeping it in at the point, which is all I really need from them.

Secondly, I wanted to be able to create match-up nightmares at home. I'll explain this with my individual line strategies:

Lines

Top Scoring Line: Patrick Marleau - Pavel Datsyuk - Marian Hossa

These three players are considered at the very top of most people's lists when it comes to two-way players for their respective positions, so it's no coincidence that they're going to do most of their damage in the neutral zone. Marleau is one of the faster players out there and will be a beast on both sides of the puck in the neutral zone, clogging up passing lanes and stretching out the defense, Datsyuk may be the best player for clogging up the neutral zone, and Hossa is arguably the best back-checker in the league. I'm going to be pretty liberal with match-ups and offensive zone starts as their primary goal is going to be to score goals, but with them being so strong in neutral zone defense, I think that's for the best.

Secondary Scoring Line: Eric Staal - Ryan Johansen - Rick Nash

This line is getting a huge offensive zone start percentage. They would still be solid defensively, but they're at their best in the offensive zone. They're another very big and rangy line (Staal - 6'4, 205; Johansen - 6'3, 223; Nash - 6'4, 213), can control possession, and they all have complete offensive arsenals. With the Datsyuk line likely getting all the opposition's top players, they should be very effective against secondary competition.

Two-way Line: Jaden Schwartz - Patrice Bergeron - T.J. Oshie

A huge part of the match-up game is the Schwartz-Bergeron-Oshie line. This will be my go-to match-up for more skilled-based lines (think Crosby, Kane, Giroux, Kessel, etc.). Everyone knows about Bergeron's two-way prowess, but the Blues pair are two of the more underrated defensive wingers in the league. This is also a line that can both drive possession (Bergeron and Oshie are two of the stronger along-the-boards players in the league) and can be very effective in transition.

Shutdown line: Jordan Staal - Martin Hanzal - Brent Burns

The key to my match-up game is my behemoth line: Jordan Staal (6'4, 220), Martin Hanzal (6'6, 230), Brent Burns (6'5, 230). If you want to come into my team's building and establish a strong possession game (think Kopitar, Getzlaf, Perry, Lucic, etc.), this is the line you'll be up against. All are extremely effective defensively, can match-up with anyone in the size and physicality department, and can all drive possession themselves. While they can all chip in offensively, they're the line that is going to get pinned with a ridiculous number of defensive zone starts. Offense is icing on the cake for this line, they'll be doing a lot of heavy lifting.

How these lines are fully used really depends on the opposition. If it's a weaker team that doesn't require much line-matching, I'm simply going to roll 4 lines and wear the other team out with my size and puck possession. If it requires a lot of line matching, I'll do it the way I said above. However, it doesn't mean the Bergeron line can only cover skill and Hanzal can only cover physicality. They're elite defensive lines that can take on any task. If there's a noticeable strength split on two lines that predominantly rely on physicality or skill, I'll deploy them that way though.

I should also mention faceoffs, which is an important part of the game and of this team's make-up.

Left-side:

Hanzal: 55%
J. Staal: 54%
Datsyuk: 52.7% (and usually much higher)
E. Staal: 52.1%
Marleau - 51.9%

Right-side:

Bergeron: 58.7%
Johansen: 52.9%

Obviously deeper on the left, but I have the most notorious faceoff guy in the league on the right. Also, Burns is at least somewhat adept at faceoffs being 46.9% with 128 faceoffs taken. Bergeron and Hanzal/J. Staal will be taking the majority of defensive zone faceoffs regardless of which line is on.

D-Pairings

McDonagh-Girardi
Hamhuis-Seidenberg
Vlasic-Braun

The only thing that really needs to be known is that these combinations won't be split up. There's already chemistry with two of the pairs and Hamhuis and Seidenberg are guys that can play with anyone. There will be no real matching (outside of McDonagh-Girardi likely getting the top assignment), as all three pairings are perfectly capable of being a top shutdown pair, and they all play very similar games. While Seidenberg is left-handed on the right side, he actually splits his time pretty evenly between LD and RD in Boston, and is perfectly adept on both sides.

If any D-core is going to have their time evenly split, it would be this one. I plan on simply rolling the three D-pairs at both even-strength and on the PK, and getting it as close to a 3-way split for ice-time. McDonagh will get the most ice time due to his role on the PP (and Burns will get time on the point on the PP as well), with the other 5 d-men being possibilities to get spot duty on the PP every once in a while.

Only change is that when the team is down and I desperately need offense, I'd take the 4th line out of routine circulation and replace Braun with Burns to try to get more offense going.

Goaltending

Rask is the front-runner for the Vezina and has essentially played lights out his whole career. He also has one incredible playoff run under his belt and I believe he's the best combination of consistency and playoff performance in the league. Not only that, but with my team playing a more defensive and puck possession-oriented game, there won't be any concerns about him playing in a new system, whether you think those concerns are valid criticisms or not.

Bobrovsky is the reigning Vezina winner and is quietly having another great season. He's more than capable of filling in 30ish games so Rask can be fresh for a long playoff run. I believe my team is good enough to do that as well.

NHL:

I decided to build the other three teams first, and then focus on my NHL team. In my opinion, success in hockey is much more about the team as a whole instead of having the most talented individuals. Therefore, I thought I could assembly a decent NHL team from the "leftovers".

The team is basically all about playoff performance. All four lines are great defensively and also can produce offensively. But even more importantly, we'll forecheck and hit aggressively for full 60 minutes and try to be a horrifying team to play against. Leadership won't be a problem either with guys like Iginla, S. Koivu, Doan, Brodeur etc.

Lines:

Michalek - Lecavalier - Iginla
Kuznetsov - Henrique - Brown
Niederreiter - Legwand - Doan
Cogliano - Koivu - Bickell

The first line has scoring touch and playoff experience, combined with good size. Iggy and Vinny are still elite players, and Michalek is a talented scorer on the wing when healthy. Injuries have been a problem for him though, which can be a small threat.

Second line is the youngster line, and it won't play as straightforward hockey as the other lines. Instead, they will try to hold the puck and give Kuznetsov often chances to do his magic. The young Russian is the most dangerous offensive weapon in our team, and will get a bit more freedom to do his stuff. Brown has had a subpar season, but he's still a Stanley Cup champion and a player that fits our philosophy perfectly. Henrique balances the team nicely, and will surely enjoy the passes coming from Kuznetsov. All three are great skaters, which creates problems for opposing defenses.

Third and fourth line can be mixed if needed, but they are a mix of experienced veterans and younger speedsters. The focus will be on defense, but our bottom lines are capable of scoring as well.

Defensive pairings:

Orpik - Hamonic
Goligoski - DeKeyser
Jackman - L. Schenn

Our defense won't be afraid of physical play, that's for sure. The second pairing is the one that has most skill with the puck, but they aren't soft at all either. Luke Schenn is paired with one of the most reliable defensive players in the league, and they form a rock-solid third pairing.

The first and third pairings will be the ones who play against the opponents top lines, and second one will be on the ice when we try to score against their weaker lines (preferably with our second line).

Goaltending:

Fleury
Brodeur

Flower's playoff performances have been widely criticized, but he's already a Stanley Cup champion. He's also having another great season. Marty is obviously a legend, but he can still also step in when needed. Brodeur's experience will also be helpful in his role as a mentor for the younger Québécois.

PP units:

Kuznetsov - Henrique - Brown
Goligoski - DeKeyser

Michalek - Lecavalier - Niederreiter
Iginla - Hamonic

Our powerplay will basically be as simple as our even strenght game; shots and guys crashing the net. We want to see ugly goals. Kuznetsov will again be an exception, and sometimes we can try Vinny with him and have a different approach.

SH units:

Koivu - Cogliano
Jackman - Schenn

Legwand - Doan
Orpik - Hamonic

Head coach option: Guy Boucher, SC Bern

NBA:

Like the NHL team, my NBA lineup also has many experienced veterans with championship rings and Olympic gold medals. Another similarity is the importance of defense, and our team will play defense first. Fundamentally sound basketball, crashing the boards and driving to the hoop.

With the speed of our roster, we are also able to kill opponents with our feet and movement, which makes fast breaks big part of our game. Paul Pierce doesn't completely fit our speed game, but he brings variation to our offense.

Depth chart:

Point guard:

John Wall
Ricky Rubio
Victor Oladipo

2010 first overall pick John Wall is maybe the most important player of our team as the playmaker. Wall likes to drive to the net and play fast, which fits our ideology perfectly. He's also one of the quickest players in the league today. Wall isn't really a big shooter, but he has improved his 3-point accuracy significantly.

Ricky Rubio brings a flashy offensive alternative to our bench. He's one of the best passers and ballhandlers in the world, and his defensive flaws won't be a problem when playing with Iguodala and Oladipo. If Rubio would be a better shooter, there's no chance he would be a backup. Victor Oladipo can also play as point guard when we need extreme defense, but his primary position is still SG.

Shooting guard:

Andre Iguodala
Victor Oladipo
Gordon Hayward
Giannis Antetokounmpo
John Wall

One of the best defenders in NBA, Andre Iguodala is a perfect match for us. He can be put against any player in the league without having to worry about his performance. Andre won't be scoring 20 points every night, but the Olympic winner is a key element of our game plan.

The backup, Victor Oladipo is also another master of defensive game. The two can also be on the court same time when we need more D (Oladipo as PG or Iguodala as SF). Gordon Hayward can play SG, as can Greek Freak and John Wall. Wall could be moved to play the two-guard if we need to score a lot quickly, and Rubio would then take the point.

Small forward:

Paul Pierce
Gordon Hayward
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Andre Iguodala

The Truth is getting old, but he still has a long playoff run left in him. Pierce still has great touch, and his experience is valuable to us. We'll try to have Pierce and KG on the court as often as possible, and Gordon Hayward will probably play as much minutes as Pierce, and will occasionally have the starting spot. Hayward along Wall, Iguodala and Blake Griffin would give us one of the fastest starting lineups ever.

Having Giannis Antetokounmpo stepping in brings us even more athleticism, but he's still quite raw as a player. The Greek will have a great chance to learn from Pierce, and I wouldn't be bewildered if he would become a star under that mentorship. Iguodala can also switch to the 3 spot if needed.

Power forward:

Blake Griffin
Kevin Garnett
Paul Pierce

Blake Griffin is more than just a great dunker. He's amazingly athletic for a big man, and can basically do everything. We don't want to see him taking many jumpshots though. Griffin will often play with Hayward, and Kevin Garnett will be placed next to his long-time teammate Pierce.

Both Blake and KG play the game with fire in their eyes, and aren't afraid to get physical. KG's defensive game is also extremely valuable for us. We won't have that much depth at the four spot, so in case of injuries we'd have to use either Pierce or one of the centers as power forward.

Center:

Tyson Chandler
Jonas Valanciunas
Greg Oden
Kevin Garnett

Tyson Chandler has had a down season (like the rest of the Knicks), but his defense will be valuable for us. Griffin taking control of the offense, Chandler will be in a supporting role. When looking for more offense, we can put in young Lithuanian Jonas Valanciunas, who has great potential and will probably play almost as much as Chandler (similar to Pierce-Hayward -situation).

Greg Oden's knees are obviously a tragedy, but if he can get himself to shape, he could be a massive asset for us. His talent is unquestionable. KG can also take the center spot in some situations.

Late-game offensive lineup:

Rubio
Wall
Pierce
Griffin
Garnett

Late-game defensive lineup:

Oladipo
Iguodala
Pierce
Garnett
Chandler

Head coach option: Shaka Smart, VCU
