The National Hockey League has been named to the prestigious Official Shortlist for the 2011 Beyond Sport Awards as a finalist in both the Sport for Environment and Federation of the Year categories.

NHL Green, the National Hockey League's sustainability initiative, is one of three contenders for the 2011 Federation of the Year. NHL Green's portfolio of environmental initiatives, including the NHL Food Recovery Program, NHL Tailgate Recycling and NHL Water Restoration Project, were considered as part of the League's nomination for this award. Also detailed within the NHL's entry is the newly developed NHL Metrics System, designed to track and analyze energy, water and waste data to produce efficiencies across all 30 NHL facilities. The award was open to any national governing body or international federation, any rights-holder of a recognized competition or league, or a foundation unaffiliated with one of those types of organizations. Federations in consideration for the award were said to have made significant efforts to address major issues occurring within their communities.
The Sport for the Environment Award is presented to an organization which best promotes the understanding and awareness of environmental issues and reduces negative impacts on the natural environment. The National Hockey League's Food Recovery Program, launched League-wide in October 2010, is one of three projects under final consideration for this award. Throughout the 2010-11 season, the League's 30 Member Clubs diverted 105 tons of food from landfill, redistributing more than 160,000 meals to local shelters and places of need. The project received national recognition when nine NHL Clubs were honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for their commitment to food waste reduction in early 2011. The NHL Food Recovery Program was developed in cooperation with Rock and Wrap It Up!, a non-profit anti-poverty think tank, and will continue for the 2011-12 NHL season and beyond.
